Giuliani Strikes a Note With California GOP Testing the Waters, Former N.Y. Mayor Garners 4 Ovations

SACRAMENTO, Feb. 10 -- Rudolph W. Giuliani came west to learn whether his brand of Republican politics has a chance among party members significantly more conservative than himself. By the time he had received a fourth standing ovation Saturday at the California Republican Party convention, the answer seemed clear.

Equating the U.S. fight against terrorism with the Civil War and the Cold War, Giuliani told about 750 of his party's faithful that failure in Iraq would turn that country into a "massive headquarters for terrorism."

"Having had a job where I didn't have any choice but to make a decision," the former mayor of New York said, "prepares you as best you can be prepared to be the president of the United States."

Arnold tried - as I recall, the people of CA voted down all his referendum initiatives on budget issues and reform of municipal worker pensions and such.

The man is an unabashed gun grabber - among his many other liberal tendencies. All your rights hinge on the right to keep and bear arms. How can you support this man?

Hitlary and Juliani. Two crap sandwiches. You keep trying to tell me your crap sandwich has salt and pepper on it. It's gonna taste better. Trust us. Lesser of two evils ya know....

No thanks. You people aren't conservatives. You aren't even libertarians. 40 years ago you would have been called left wing nuts. Yeesh.

So tell me about Duncan Hunter! All I know is that he's a longtime Congressman from San Diego.

Because your chart is redundant and a waste of bandwidth. Rudy supporters know about his social liberal past, yet we still support him.

Why?

No it's the Hillary camp that thinks we are stupid.
They think they can send plants to messageboards to try to divide Republicans (I believe her campaign staff trolls this board regularly), but in 2008 we will unite behind our Republican candidate, no matter if that is Guiliani, McCain, Romney or Rice.

I don't have one and I do know how the process works.

I see a lot of folks that have already anointed one, yet he hasn't even officially announced.

It's no rap intended at you and those backing Rudy currently, just try and remember you're trying to win folks over, not berate them because they are as easily convinced he is it or they have their own ideas of the best person for the job. Tossing out terms like the unappeasables by some and he's unelectable is the same quagmire California is paying so dearly for and will for years. You don't unify parties by cutting half the base off at the knees and telling them to jog to the finish line like a good little scout.

btw, I don't have a candidate, I have leaned toward about 4 so far including in no particular order, Rudy, Mitt, Duncan and god forbid, McCain (anything to stop Hillary yaknow, who may not even end up being her own party's pick) , none has distinguished themselves to this point as none has had to run the full gauntlet to date.

BTW, if the California GOP supports Rudy's candidacy, what does that make them?

" Hate RINOs, moderates, centrists, etc. Support only conservative Republicans."

The above quote is what you wrote on your home page. You seem to have changed your views dramatically since you first joined FR in 1999.

---"but in 2008 we will unite behind our Republican candidate, no matter if that is Guiliani, McCain, Romney or Rice."---

Not all of us. I'll support any nominee but Rudy at this point (though not happily Romney or McCain). But I will work for a Third Party candidate if it's Rudy.

It's just too much to ask of my conscience to support Rudy. I've worked too long on the issues I care about to have them flushed permanently from the GOP in one election.

California and Republican used to mean something.

Sadly, not anymore. Tom McClintock is about the only "real" Republican left at the state level, and Duncan Hunter/Dana Rohrbacher at the federal level.

These people embraced "Da Govanatah". Nuff said.

I'm done voting for the lesser of two evils as well. If the GOP doesn't put up a good candidate, then my vote will go elsewhere. This country may go down the toilet, but at least I won't have voted for those responsible. It's time to force our will on the GOP leadership. Look what the reverse has gotten us. We can still make things happen when we make enough noise (e.g. Harriet Miers).

Okay. Tell me which one of the following issues I've got wrong. I say, Rudy Giuliani, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, Joe Lieberman, ALL hold the same position on all these issues. Where am I wrong? ~ Is Pro-choice ~ Supports Abortion on Demand ~ Supports Partial Birth Abortion ~ Supports Roe v. Wade ~ Supports Taxpayer Funded Abortions ~ Supports Embryonic Stem Cell ~ Opposes a Federal Marriage Amendment ~ Supports Gay Domestic Partnership/Civil Unions ~ Supports Openly Gay Military ~ Opposes Defense of Marriage Act ~ Supports Amnesty for Illegal Aliens: AKA. "regularization" ~ Supports Special Path to Citizenship for Illegal Aliens ~ Opposes Tough Penalties for Employers who hire Illegal Aliens ~ Supports Sanctuary Cities/Ignoring Immigration Law ~ Supports gun control and Confiscating firearms ~ Supports an Assault Weapons Ban ~ Initiated Frivolous Lawsuits Against Gun Makers ~ Supports Extensive Gun Registration and Licensing

Those are basically three social issues. I addressed those three social issues in my post #86.

You initially said "all" social issues. Are you now back tracking from that statement?

On all social issues, Rudy is not a hardcore leftwing extremist, in the mold of Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy.
