The "Republican Revolution" of 1994 has become a faint glint in America's rearview mirror, but in the aftermath of the GOP's midterm thrashing, chief architect Newt Gingrich contends there's no better time than now to "re-launch the movement of Goldwater, Reagan and the Contract with America."
In the run-up to Labor Day, when he'll decide whether to vie for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, the former House speaker plans a kind of anti-campaign, vowing to eschew 30-second sound-bites in favor of a grass-roots, locally focused effort to apply conservative solutions to problems, and, ultimately, "force change" on Washington.
"We ought to spend all of 2007 as Americans talking about solutions," he told WND before speaking at the recent National Review Conservative Summit in Washington.
Conventional wisdom says any serious candidate for president in 2008 needs to enter the race now, but Gingrich considers that nonsense.
"It is way too early," he told WND. "This entire process is a full employment act for consultants. It has no meaning to reality. It drains the candidates, it focuses them on fundraising – how can you possibly have a rational campaign in February of 2007 to explain what you will do in 2009?

"This idea that you've got to run for an entire year to get permission to run for an entire year, to finally get permission to have the country mad at you just strikes me as nuts," Gingrich told WND. "And people who want to go run should run. But I think it's a very banal way to spend a year of your life, and I think it actually weakens your ability to understand the country and weakens your ability to gather the ideas we need to govern."

Most of the Newt bashing somes from those who have their own pet candidate. Very childish.

G: There should be. And I think the focus has been on doctors performing abortions. And in that sense that we want to move the society as rapidly as we can that people should select adoption rather than abortion and that choosing abortion is not acceptable.
Gingrich stopped the 40 years of Dem domination of the House, so we shouldn't underestimate him.
But if he would pull this out -- win the presidency and regain Congress for the Republicans, he would deserve to be called SuperNewt.
Actually Newt is positioning himself well. The other guys will have just about played themselves out when he comes along. They might even be a little tired of it all by then.

Exactly. It's way too early for me to have decided who I'm willing to support as the Republican nominee, but Newt is the only one so far who has promoted conservative principals on a national level. As for the pet candidates, all the other candidates have their own problems. Giuliani has too many liberal positions on domestic issues. McCain seems to think the media vote in the Republican primary rather than Republicans.
Duncan Hunter, and man, am I going to take some flak here, looks like nothing more than your typical career congressman to me. As chairman of the Armed Services Committee, he's committed a cardinal sin in my book, that of using Defense appropriations maintain our military as another public works boondoggle rather than allowing it to be reformed for the future. He justifies it by saying he's protecting the "Arsenal of Democracy". Give me a break.
From the ones I see out there hustling for nomination, methinks only Newt could save the party.

Good idea. The alternative is bat-winged Hillary's Sovietized America.
If the Republican Party seriously did do another Contract with America months prior to November '06, then the Republicans may have had a much better result instead of a complete takeover of the Democrat Party. Also, the Republicans badly failed to practice what they preached over and over about smaller government, fiscal discipline, deregulation reforms, privatization reforms, fully enforcing all of the present laws throughout the entire U.S. that deal with illegal immigration, doing everything that they could do to create a balanced budget every year, the list goes on and on-all of these things combined cost the Republicans their majority status. I'm still waiting for the Republican Party in general and at every political level to wake up from their last defeat, and I don't know if they definitely will. Having "establishment" Republicans in leadership positions at the federal level and choosing "pro-amnesty for illegal immigrants" Senator Mel Martinez to co-chair the Republican National Committee isn't a good start IMHO!
American citizens already have a contract. It's called the Constitution. Try following it and watch us prosper!
He's right about that. Before Iowa everyone in the MSM had practically crowned Howard Dean the dem nominee. He seemed a shoe in. Remember?
Newt's not going to go sit in the shadows until next fall. He's going to be out there, working with the base forming and fighting for conservative solutuions to the problems the country faces today. Newt's got a whole lot to offer and I'm glad he's on our side. I hope he decides to run.
