Giuliani says gun control helped reduce N.Y. crime

SACRAMENTO -- Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.

"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."

He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.

Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."

The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.

Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.

Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."

He then alluded to making an announcement in multiple locations "so we get more attention" but provided no details.

I understand the right to bear arms.

Then, Mr. G, why can't I in NYC? even with an unrestricted NY carry permit?

How can he understand the second amendment and then make
the "hunting" reference?

The two have nothing to do with each other....

He "understands the second ammendment" and his laws are ok because "they will have no effect on hunting". OK, as a strong RKBA supporter this is not an encouraging article.

Some of Rudy's supporters here would do well to get to his advisers and explain the basics to him.

He is not demonstrating anything except that everything he knows about the 2nd Ammendment he learned from Al Gore or the Brady Bunch with this quote.

Rudy is a RINO and must be opposed by conservatives.

"I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."

Uh, no, you don't. The Second Amendment is not about hunting. It is about self-protection, especially against tyrannical governments.

The article read, "He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting."

It isn't about hunting. It has never been about hunting. It's about law-abiding citizens having the means to blow bad guys into the next world in defense of their lives and property.

I used gun control in NY--but I understand the Second Amendment.

That's appalling! He understands the 2A, but decided to thrash people's rights all the same. The worst part is that many New Yorkers think it's great!

Giuliani's lack of understanding of the 2nd Amendement makes me doubtful that he'll appoint Alito types to the federal bench.

This just goes to show you how clueless Rudy is on the 2nd Amendment! It does have a damn thing to do with hunting.
The founding fathers intention was to allow the citizens of the country to have firearms in their private possession
so that they, the citizens, would have the ability to fight an oppressive government if such a government ever came into existence.

I'm sick of these liberal politicians such as former U.S. Senator George Mitchell, and now Rudy, who talk about "hunting" and "sporting purposes."

I worry about holding on to a solid red state South in the next presidential election.

"An unarmed populace are subjects; an armed populace are citizens."

How about the little gem of while he was doing this he went to court to fight AGAINST illegal immigration enforcement. Makes ya think huh?

Giuliani is just another statist. And he means to rule, not govern.

Doesn't matter if he has an 'R' or a 'D' after his name.

I give him an 'F'

A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed

It takes a militia to hunt game?
