Nope, he is alive and writing:

"I say game departments should ban them from the prairies and woods."

Someone ought to tell John that SNIPER RIFLES have no place in hunting (his photo at the top of his article shows that he is using a SNIPER RIFLE) and that someone ought to take away that SNIPER RIFLE away from that old coot before he hurts someone. /heavy sarcasm

Just one final statement.
I've been sitting here getting more and more fed up with all of this talk about these, pieces of machinery, having no legitimate sporting purpose, no legitimate hunting purpose, people, that is not the point of the second amendment!
The second amendment is not about duck hunting, and I know I'm not going to make very many friends saying this, but it's about our right, all of our right to be able to protect our selves from all of you guys up there.
And nobody's talked about that.

Dr. Suzanna Gratia, Killeen massacre survivor who watched as her parents were murdered because she obeyed Texas law and left her handgun locked in her car. Appearing before Rep Schumer's committee hearings on the assault weapons ban

Fine. I'll go hunting with an 1800s style weapon. Perhaps a 12 or 24 pounder loaded with grapeshot. Take a deer and cut firewood, all at the same time.

This is an excellent point. As a public we are so underarmed against a government that could become fascist, that even assault weapons would be largley ineffective against the military weapons of today.

Since the author writes for 'Outdoor Life,' the only way to get across to him is to voice your disaapproval to his employer. E-mails are nice and they're easy, but if you want to make an impression, go to the trouble of writing a paper letter and mailing it. That will definitely get their attention.
As a secondary tactic, write to their advertisers.I had a run-in with a magazine several years ago. Repeated letters to the editor and publisher got nowhere. But when I threatened to write to their advertisers they came around in a hurry.

I saw military rifles for American citizens - as our founders intended. Lets leave recreational hunting out of this story.

We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern.

Do NOT let this dirtbag's comments about those of us who used these weapons to protect his freedom go unanswered.

It ain't about hunting.

But the gun grabber's tactics of divide and get them all one at a time is working.

How about a good old fashioned punt gun that was used for duck hunting.

Would work well during the next period of urban unrest AKA riot.

Remington seems to be taking this very seriously.

ALL - Jim Zumbo in NO WAY speaks for Remington! His opinions are his own. We at Remington take our 2nd Amendment Rights extremely seriously and ourselves market and manufacturer a AR based 308 rifle. Remington Arms supports the lawful use of all firearms by their owners in whatever legal manner they choose. We at Remington feel that it is the diversity of our tastes and uses of firearms that should also be the binding element that assists us all in defending the rights granted to us by our fore fathers.

Rest assured that Remington not only does not support Jim's view, we totally disagree! I have no explanation for his perspective.

I proudly own AR's and support everyones right to do so!

What makes me sick is how quickly people on the Internet have called to boycott Remington. All Jim said was he was hunting with our people! This is normal course in our industry. How else do people think we field test? with writers.

Remington has spent tens of millions of dollars to defend your rights and how quickly the thanks is threat and boycott! Please feel Free to post that Remington does not agree with Zumbo in any way shape or form and we will assess our relationship with him accordingly.

Agreed, and when I read the last line, I think it will end very quickly and permanently.
