MISSION — A former Hidalgo County district clerk has been arrested in Mexico and brought back the United States after authorities issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of sexually assaulting a minor, police said. Omar Guerrero was arrested Saturday evening in or near Reynosa in the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas, Mission Police Chief Leo Longoria said. He is expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon.
“This was coming,” Longoria said. “We have received information previously that he was in our area of reach, and we’ve been patient.”
Guerrero has been missing since Dec. 6 when Mission police issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with the sexual assault of a teenager. He faces up to 99 years in prison if convicted of the first-degree felony.
Once considered a rising star in Hidalgo County government, Guerrero has faced a series of legal setbacks that have hurt his career.
In November 2005, McAllen police arrested the clerk after officers pulled over one of his friends. Police say Guerrero was disoriented and slurring his words. They also found 0.1 grams of marijuana in a car registered to his father.
Guerrero refused to take a blood test, citing his belief in Ifa, an ancient African religion.
In September, he went to court on charges of assaulting and threatening to kill his wife. The following December, McAllen police trying to track down Guerrero on his pending sexual assault charges said they found a substantial amount of drugs in his home.
Guerrero lost his re-election bid in March.
Mission is about five miles from the Mexico-U.S. border near the southern tip of Texas.
