Girl Scout Cookies Boycott Called by National Action Against Obesity
National Action Against Obesity ^ | February 19, 2007

New York, NY (PRWeb) February 19, 2007 -- www.actionagainstobesity.com -- As America's child and adult obesity figures rise, National Action Against Obesity (NAAO), calls for a boycott of the reported $700 million in Girl Scout Cookies sold annually.

Profiting off cookies -- it's the wrong message, the wrong product and the wrong era. Girl Scouts have an economic, medical and moral imperative to dump junk food as their $700 million fundraising source. NAAO would like the Girl Scouts to commit to a 5-year plan transitioning away from junk food as the organization's primary fundraiser "Girl Scout Cookies are high-calorie, high-sugar, high in saturated fat and nearly devoid of nutrition. Using young girls as a front to push millions of cookies onto an already bloated population further exacerbates an alarming crisis, no matter how cute the uniforms are," said NAAO President MeMe Roth. "The Girl Scouts sell up to 200 million boxes yearly -- that's about one box for every overweight American."

Girl Scouts of the USA have a flawed business model in direct conflict with their posted mission statement -- 'Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.' "Profiting off cookies -- it's the wrong message, the wrong product and the wrong era. Girl Scouts have an economic, medical and moral imperative to dump junk food as their $700 million fundraising source. NAAO would like the Girl Scouts to commit to a 5-year plan transitioning away from junk food as the organization's primary fundraiser," continued Roth.

NAAO suggests Girl Scouts look to Boy Scouts as a model -- they're known for community service, unlike Girl Scouts singularly identified with baked goods. "Do your good deed -- while Girl Scout Cookies are on sale through March, smile at the children, offer a donation, but leave those cookies behind."

Thanks for the ping.

Tell me more about this cookies for the troops thing. Do all the girl scouts gangs or troops or whatever you call them have this or is it just a local thing where you are?

This is the first time in 15 years or more that I don't have a grand daughter involved with the G.S., either that or they forgot about me.

I'd like to contribute to cookies for troops, everybody in their right mind loves G.S. cookies.

As far as I know the "Taste of Home" program is Girl Scout wide. The troop, or specific girl schout/brownie gets the credit, but there is no echange of cookies involved.

You just pay your $3.50 per box and at the end of the cookie drive the GS will send how ever many boxes to the troops.

I sincerely hope that paulat is right and this thread really is a fake. If it's not, a certain MeMe/MiMi needs a box of Girl Scout cookies crammed down her pretty little throat.

What kind of a reaction did you get with that pronouncement?

Silence.

We'll see what happens next month.

If the right thing doesn't, I'm done.

Why can't these people get lives aleady.

Would like to know the answer to that question myself.

Just who are all the people who keep coming up with all this c@@p? Who pays them to meddle in everyone else's business? There are too many of them for all to be independently wealthy. So, someone has to be supporting them. If they were out working to make a living and tending to their own business, they wouldn't have time to worry about whether you and I eat cookies, smoke or may be a little overweight.

A lot of people put links to "The Onion," as life-imitates-art-imitates-life.

Nope - not even links to The Onion are allowed on FR. That's the way The Onion wants it.

I told them today I would not be coming to the noontime Board meetings anymore unless they feed us

And they are supposed to feed you, why? I bring my own lunch to work...I don't depend on anyone else...what's the problem?

I will have to ask the store manager, I suppose. I don't remember seeing a troop number, or any uniforms either.

It's been a long time since I was a scout, but I seem to remember having to wear my Girl Scout uniform whenever I was out representing the Girl Scouts. When I was trying to sell cookies, for instance...

I was never a scout, but the uniform rule you mention remains true to this day.

What you described is totally unacceptable. I really encourage you to get a hold of the GS council and tell them about it. Thnkgs like that givethe rest of the girls a bad name.

Apparently the article isn't a fake. I wish it were.

The ONLY reason that group is going after Girl Scout cookies specifically instead of all cookies is that without the sales from those cookies, the GS may cease to exist.

And we all know the left would like that. Just can't have a group that teaches things like honor and duty, etc.

I suggest NAOO kiss my butt.

Girl Scouts do plenty of philanthropic projects. These are nothing but food nazi's.

And Meme Roth is making how much in profits by going around & telling people they are fat?
