Al Gore will be treading the red carpets of Hollywood on Sunday when he attends the Oscars where his climate change film, An Inconvenient Truth, has been nominated for the best documentary award.
But the man whom many Democrats still insist beat George Bush in 2000, is also keeping a toe-hold on the 2008 presidential contest by refusing to rule out, categorically, making another bid for the White House.
When asked — as he is frequently — whether he will stand again, Mr Gore professes exasperation before saying: “I can’t foresee circumstances in which I would.”
This is a similar form of words to those repeatedly used by Michael Heseltine to defuse speculation that he was planning to challenge Margaret Thatcher for the leadership of the Conservative Party — until he did just that.
Mike Feldman, a long-time friend and adviser to Mr Gore, told The Times: “Anybody who knows Al Gore will tell you that he is already involved in a campaign against global warming — and that is the only campaign he is involved in. But it’s right to say he has not closed the door (on the presidency) entirely. He is 58 years old and is not willing to do that just yet.”
Donna Brazile, who ran his last presidential campaign in 2000, last month teasingly told activists that she had not decided who to back for 2008. “Wait till Oscar night,” she said. “I’m dating, I haven’t fallen in love yet.”
Mr Gore has reinvented himself: a wooden performer seven years ago, he is now a passionate and visionary advocate for action against climate change.
And unlike Hillary Clinton, with whom he had a testy relationship in her husband’s White House, he opposed the Iraq War from the outset.
Mrs Clinton, along with other Democratic candidates, is now said to be anxiously studying his girth, which expanded rapidly when he left office six years ago, as a measure of his political ambitions. If they can get their arms around him, he might be standing or, as Ms Brazile put it: “on Oscar night, if Al Gore has slimmed down 25 or 30 pounds, Lord knows.” She believes that over a drawn-out race for the presidency, other candidates will be facing “burn-out” by the autumn. “Al Gore could enter the race tomorrow, September or November.
“A lot of candidates got in early for name recognition, or because they need the time to raise money, [but] Al Gore is a much different man than he was in 2000. He has the credibility and the stature. He has become a cultural hero,” she said.
Over the coming months he can easily maintain a higher public profile than many other candidates. In addition to the Oscars this weekend, Mr Gore has also been nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize in October.
Nor should fund-raising be a problem for a man who is said to have amassed a personal fortune worth as much as $100 million (£50 million) by acting as an adviser to Google and Apple Computer since leaving the White House.
All of this does not, of course, mean Mr Gore will stand. But this weekend he stands astride the two great gossip factories of America: Washington on the east coast and Hollywood on the west. And, for the moment he seems happy, to keep the rumours alive.

Tubby Richardson is gonna be Hillary's running mate. If he gets too uppity and tries to move on the top job, he's gonna be Wellstoned on a future trip abroad. As for Manbearpig, the more, the merrier. Too bad we have such a crap RINO lineup on our side.

Al Gore might be the biggest simpleton ever on a National Stage, he is plain dumb.
A product of a soft life where everything was laid out for him, he's a product, not a man. The next original thought he has will be his first, I have yet to see him ever display any intelligence whatsoever. He's a mindless parrot who delivers speeches written by other people, pushes policies that other people tell him he should and repeats blatant lies in a documentary which is plainly fiction and lacks the intellectual curiosity to question it.
Never has a man so uniquely unqualified, lacking any talent in anything he's ever done, no success in any other field than politics where the course was laid out for him and he robotically followed the game plan plotted by others reached such a level of power.
He really believes he is something special, he's deluded enough to believe he invented the internet, but can't identify Thomas Jefferson. A man of privledge who only can operate in an isolated programmed world, it's not all his fault that he's an utterly worthless human being, he's just a product, a product created by his family name. A stiff, uncharasmatic robot who can parrot inane liberal positions, as long as he doesn't have to answer anything he hasn't been prepped for, then he's speechless.
Good for him that he doesn't know it but he's a pitiful exceuse for an American Male, he would starve if left to his own devices, he's unqualified to anything but manual labor. I'm not being over the top at all here, if he was a sheetrocker working on construction sites he would be considered the dummy in the group.

Agreed Gore entering the race would hurt the Dems - he has even higher negatives than Hillary and his strength is lefter wing of the party so he'd be weaker in the general.
Call me a crackpot conspiracy theorist, but I really do believe Obama is in cahoots with the Clintons. I think that he is being used to deflect attention away from Her Heinous, distracting the media and the voters, until the moment just before the Dem convention when he will agree ("for the good of the country") to step aside, and will order his faithful to give their full, unqualified support to Clinton. Then he will take his $12 million taxpayer dollars and go away.
If Gore does run, he is such a doofus and his people so delusional that I can't see Hillary having any real trouble with him.
I think they're more afraid he will endorse whoever gets the nomination.

Richardson has scarcely done a damn thing in NM beyond his obsession with the choo-choo multi-billion $$ boondoggle to Santa Fe and proliferating the criminal rodent hegemony of the statewide offices (nevermind his sexual assault of his OWN running mate ! The only reason she stayed on the ticket was because I'm sure he gave her a personal guarantee that he'd be vacating the office early so she could get it).
As for Bredesen, I'm here in Nashville and have known him for 20 years, and I don't trust him as far as I can throw him. His image and the reality are quite different. There's been corruption wafting from his direction going back to his Mayoral days (and I know some other things that I'd just as soon not repeat publicly, only that, like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, I've seen behind the curtain). Bredesen also doesn't look well and I don't think he has come clean to the public about his health, another thing he has been dishonest about (he had a mysterious illness last year where he disappeared from view for a couple weeks). The media, just like with Tubby, carried these cretins to second terms with nary a question as to their dreadful records last November. Disgusting.
If Algore runs against Hillary!, he is going to have to be destroyed. Algore cannot be separated from his campaign on Global Warming. Therefore, the campaign on Global Warming will also have to be destroyed.
It will be easy to do. It's a house of cards. The science just isn't there to back him up. The only reason Algore has any credibility at all is because it is politically convenient for many people to pretend he has a point. If he runs against Hillary!, it is no longer politically convenient for him to be leading a powerful movement.
All Hillary! will have to do is break the consensus, and there will be nothing left.

Well, that might be one of his virtues. I'm reading the late Gordo Cooper's book, "Leap of Faith", and he talks about the UFO issue (ironically, he said that the one place you'd think he'd have seen one, orbiting the Earth, he didn't). Of course, I'm one of those that tends to agree that the government can't really tell the people what actually happens... after all, this is the same public that flips out when a gallon of gas goes over $3 and can't even deal with how bad the Clintoon scandals were (nuclear secrets being sold), and you're gonna tell about space alien landings ? I don't think so. If Tubby wants to do us a real favor, make Roswell 2nd and spill on everything he knows on America's premier crime family (ah, but then if he does that, he'll end up like the Roswell aliens).
It's a very clever plan, if true. This way, HC would get the black vote as well, and Obama could walk off into the sunset, rich, and with the credit and glory of having "unselfishly" served his party. YUK!!
