Role Reversal:The White House Press Corps Faces Answers Questions from Tony Snow (man-bites-dog)
Politico ^ | February 22, 2007 | Mike Allen

Posted on 02/22/2007 7:42:13 AM PST by IrishMike

In what CBS’s Bob Schieffer called a “man-bites-dog story,” White House press secretary Tony Snow put A-list reporters on the spot Tuesday night, in front of C-SPAN cameras.

The forum, the first collaboration between the White House Correspondents Association and National Press Club, provoked unusually candid remarks by the reporters, who usually are loathe to talk about such delicate subjects as how ideology and blogs affect their work. And Snow acknowledged that they made some good points.

Snow, a former editorial writer who came to the White House after working as the host of “Fox News Sunday” and an anchor for Fox News, set a jocular tone for the colloquy with six of the best-known and most outspoken White House correspondents.

“For those of you expecting theatrical savagery on my part,” he began, “forget about it. I’m just too nice. Having been on both sides – having been in the press, and also being a press secretary – one of the things you don’t see quite often in the briefings is how much fun we do have.”

Here are some excerpts of memorable exchanges from the hourlong session before an overflow crowd of more than 400, as televised by C-SPAN:

Tony Snow to David Gregory of NBC News: “How often have you gone home and stared in the mirror and you said, ‘Man, I tell you what. If I could do it over again, I really would have been nicer to that press secretary.' ”

Gregory, laughing and closing his eyes as if to concentrate: “Let me think how often that’s happened. I wanted to say at the outset: That’s an interesting question. And when I have something to announce, I’ll announce it.”

Snow: “Did you write that before you came?”

Tony Snow is a class act. He's in the right place at the right time. I can think of no one else I'd rather see in his position.

I get sick of people treating no account left wing "reporters" as if they have some "good points". The media sucks and is pathetic compared to the real newsmen who came out of WWII, the big corporations have fired all their staff around the world so they can't cover stories properly, and certainly the biggest crime against humanity is any show in which they interview each other.

They don't deserve the time of day.

Sorry I missed that on C-Span. I wonder if there is archived video?

I just found out that Tony will be the keynote speaker at a GOP dinner tonight here in Pittsburgh, about a mile from my house. Apparently it's too late for me to make reservations. :-(

Tony is good, soft spoken and can be very hard hitting.
I liked the first spokesman, Mike (... name slips my mind).
I was never too keen on Scott Mc Clellen.

"They don't deserve the time of day".

...I couldn't agree more! It's time these scumbag, left-wing reporters were taken to task. Being friendly and "jocular" doesn't cut it when you're dealing with Dem politicians, reporters whatever. It's NEVER worked for Bush. It NEVER works! Call a spade a spade and ask point blank..."Why do you hate America so much"? "Yes you do hate America or you wouldn't be siding with the terrorists so consistently"! "What, exactly, do the democrats have planned for the future of this country"? "So far, it's been nothing but 'fix healthcare', 'fix the disparity between poor and rich', 'raise minimum wage'"! "What about stopping the next terrorist attack"?! "You people never talk about this subject, and it's inevitable"!

Richard Wolffe, Newsweek senior White House correspondent: “I totally agree. David hit on a good point here that a lot of the blogs are trying to divine motive and bias. There seems to be this sort of witch hunt that’s out there. A lot of the blogs are unduly devoted to media criticism which, itself, is kind of interesting given all the things you could comment on … The interesting thing, in looking at the political coverage as people try to look at what we do, is that they want us to play a role that really isn’t our role. Our role is to ask questions and get information.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if "journalists" actually did that? Note the snide remarks about media criticism - by what standard are those blogs "unduly devoted" to it? Sounds like a reporter who can dish it out but can't take it. The bias is real, and it's there for anybody with average reading comprehension skills to see.

So, Mr. Newsweek Reporter, tell me again, how many people did Newsweek manage to kill as a result of their false koran-flushing article?

It's not America they hate so much.

It's Aericanism they hate - the foundation, the precepts, the history, the ideals, the goals, the red-whit-and-blue patriotism.

They are globalists, and loathe nationalism, and particularly nationlistic pride.

They hate America ALL THE MORE because our national pride is NOT based on the vain, politically-correct assumptions of moral equivalence, but rather on GENUINE ACCOMPLISHMENT.

That's why virtually ALL computer languages are English-based.

That's why 95% of the world's information is stored in English.

That's why virtually ALL of the inventions of the last 100 years have ENGLISH names even in Foreign countries.

THAT's what they hate.

I watched it briefly, it appeared to be real puke fest...but of course, Tony Snow is better than the rest of the disfunctional communications from the Executive branch.
But that is not much of a compliment....if he goes back to FOX maybe we will get some interesting insight why this WH has refused to defend themselves by standing up for America and Americans on Terror, Immigration, CIA/DOJ corruption, intel traitors and other sore points.
