The former vice president's mansion in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, says the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, citing data from the Nashville Electric Service.
Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth, a 95-minute film warning of a coming cataclysm due to man-made "global warming," won the award for best documentary feature and best song.
"My fellow Americans, people all over the world, we need to solve the climate crisis," Gore said after taking the stage. "It's not a political issue, it's a moral issue. We have everything we need to get started, with the possible exception of the will to act. That's a renewable resource. Let's renew it."
Standing with Gore on the stage last night, actor Leonardo DiCaprio said, to applause, "The American film industry has always taken its obligations to society very seriously and it's now stepping up once again. Tonight, we're proud to announce that for the first time in the history of the Oscars, this show has officially gone green.
Gore then followed with, "Which means that environmentally intelligent practices have been integrated fully into every aspect of the planning and production of these Academy Awards. And you know what: It is not as hard as you might think. We have a long way to go. But all of us can do something in our own lives to make a difference."
But according to the Tennessee think tank, while the average American household consumed 10,656 kilowatt-hours last year, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 more than 20 times the national average.
Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson said that "as the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use."
Last August alone, according to Johnson' group, Gore burned through 22,619 kilowatt-hours of electricity, more than twice the amount in one month that an average American family uses in an entire year.
Gore's average monthly electric bill, the think tank says, is $1,359.
Since the release of Gore's film, the former vice president and presidential candidate's energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kilowatt-hours per month in 2005, to 18,400 per month in 2006.
The Tennessee group also points out natural gas bills for Gore's mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.
Gore paid a total of nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.
Responding to critics, Gore has described the lifestyle he and his wife Tipper live as "carbon neutral," meaning he tries to offset any plane flight or car trip by "purchasing verifiable reductions in CO2 elsewhere."
Why is this not surprising?!
I wish someone would do the total "carbon footprint" of the Hollyweirdos who gathered last night. And the diamonds? Hey, here's a clue, they are ALL Blood Diamonds.
OMG, he tweezes his eyebrows!
And how inconvenient is this truth?
Um, wouldn't this be TVA electricity, as in water turbine energy....as in another green source of energy not derived from fossil fuels? Just asking.
Gore looks like the actor Michael McKean ~ 'Lenny' of Lenny & Squiggy fame
I doubt he does it himself. He probably has an eyebrow stylist!
I betcha Algore didn't drive to the Awards show in a Prius.
I just had a disturbing visual of Gore and Breck Girl (Edwards) with make up staff.
Now I have to go find a pointy stick to poke out my mind's eye.
Yeah, I saw that after I posted.
What do you expect for a guy who made his first million from Occidental Oil??
Yaaawn, another Oscar award winner another Liberocrite!
Pray for W and Our Troops
Maybe he just shaved them off along with his beard.
I have an explanation.
Algore is growing high quality marijuana and the gro lights and hydroponics are consuming that energy. It also explains why Al is so wacked out and out of touch with reality.
His fridge and microwave obviously working overtime might be one reason it isn't.
How many hollywierd stars drove up in Prius Limos?
I guess I never realized how freakin' ugly this man is. Ugly beyond the physical. Kudos to Drudge for exposing this lying bastard.
Do we have all the facts though? He asked people to cut back? Was this month lower? Edwards is going to need a lot of juice for that house of his too.
I swear I didn't see any Toyota Prius Stretch limo's pull up at the red carpet. All the light bulbs I saw were not low wattage and where was the biodegradable toilet paper and outhouses insead of using the Royal Quiet Flush toilets?
Gore food consumption is 20 times the national average! He sits on planes and uses that fuel while refueling himself at 20 times the national average. So much for GOREbal warming.
Don't matter. Energy is not unlimited regardless of the source. Lately envirowackos have been blocking the hydroelectic projects because it dams up pristine waterways and endangers the snail darter.
My home consumes at the most about 1200 kw a month.
Algore is an energy scrooge as well as a hot air projector.
At least Ed Begley Jr. walks the walk
Surely you don't expect them to do it themselves??
so it's a "moral issue" huh Al-gee haven't you lefties been telling us since the '60s-that "you can't legislate morality. I guess unless it's you deciding what is "moral". Hey Al am I to assume that you liberals are now on board with nuclear power-"clean and green".
i think the next big scam is this whole "carbon credit" baloney. i can run my car, boat, house, ect all i want as long as i pay for my "carbon credit".
if algore were in charge, who do you think would be collecting these "carbon credits"?
He is to be PITIED for being such a LOSER.
Look at him and his wife. They are running the oven 24/7!
Like I wrote 12 months ago, unil he's retired to the hollowed out tree trunk living the life of the ascetic, he's full of it. He needs to walk the walk or be rightfully called out as a grandstander. Everyone wants to stop wasting energy. Everyone wants to cut entitlement spending too. See how far we got with that one. In a democracy nobody willingly gives up anything without a payoff or a law. :et's see the law. Lets see the real imposition of limitiations of freedom. It's make the whining about the Patriot Act seem even more farcical than it already is.
Absolutely, does anyone really need a 20,000 square foot home and that is probably small for a lot of them hypocrits
Those tweezed eyebrows of his have always grossed me out.
Hasn't he changed out all his uncandescent bulbs for compact fluorescents? :D
And Jerry Moonbeam Brown. They are the only two(2). Everyone else is a fraud.
Prove it, DiCaprio. Pampered stars are not known to sacrifice personal amenities. They'll talk a lot but their actions rarely back up their words.
I have read that the energy consumption on the average film set would power a dozen houses for a year. I doubt that the Oscars were very "green" as he claims.
He needs to practice what he preachers but people should be able to live in whatever size home they want.
Oh, puleez! He was a democratic politician. EVERYONE knows it's only the little people who are to sacrifice.
Tipper keeps feeding the vibrating bed quarters :}
More than likelt TVA nuclear.
Just think how much energy could be conserved if they didn't even have an Oscar ceremony or all those other useless awards ceremonies every year, and that includes all the wasteful parties. Announce the winners online and mail out the awards - can't get more green than that.
I hate to say it, but I have enjoyed watching Living with Ed on HGTV. He is very sincere in his efforts.
I've got a 100 y.o. 2500 sq. ft. house in northers Ohio. My gas bill average is around $200 a month. It's a worm spell at 34 right now. My electric averages 800 kWh a month. The funace motor has been running a lot this month. Several below zero days in there.
It sounds like algore is heating and lighting a shopping mall.
An honest enviromentalist. You have to respect that.
These idiots are of the "do as I say" genre.
The left suddenly finds morality? What a joke.
Anyway, didn't the Washington Post tell us that Al Whore is carbon neutral.
Now we learn the inconvenient truth that Al Whore is a grade A hypocrite.
I'm stunned. Oh by the way all you leftists, don't force your morality on me.
Does anyone remember when the Gore campaign had water released from a Connecticut River Dam in order that Big Al and Tipper could go canoeing? Big time photo op. This was in the summer of 99 and there was some drought conditions in New England as I recall--does anyone else remember this?
And furthermore, how can this be a world destroying crisis when all one needs to do is buy their way out of global warming.
That right folks, taxes and carbon trading and utopia is yours and the planet is saved.
For just $5 a day in taxation and carbon trading climate change is SOLVED!!!!!!!
