 Retired Maj. Bruce Crandall, of Manchester, Wash., stands outside his waterfront home with his original flight jacket and helmet.
Vietnam pilot to receive Medal of Honor Updated 2/22/2007 11:27 PM ET By Alan Gomez, USA TODAY Bruce and Arlene Crandall were recently cruising their Winnebago along a West Coast highway, the first leg of a cross-country trip to visit their kids, when the couple got a call from the White House. The official asked to talk to Bruce Crandall, a retired Army helicopter pilot, to say that 41 years after he took part in one of the bloodiest battles of Vietnam, Crandall was going to receive the Medal of Honor — the highest military medal in the country. With Crandall driving, his wife quietly asked the official to call back so they could pull over.
"I didn't want him to get all excited and drive us off the road," Arlene Crandall said.

Fantastic thread.
Great story of how they got the news.
It took them long enough to honor him with the medal.
I guess better late then never.
God bless Major Crandall.

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION
The light of God surround you The love of God enfold you The power of God protect you The presence of God watch over you Wherever you are, God is, And all is well. Amen.
BLESS THIS HOUSE Bless this house O Lord we pray; Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout, Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall, Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright, Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there, with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within, keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we May dwell O Lord with thee.

Crandall made the decision - without anyone requesting that he do so - to fly the medevac missions.
