Global Warming will make you healthy and sexy
American Thinker ^ | March 2, 2007 | James Lewis

In the spirit of the world campaign to save polar bears and buy carbon indulgences to assuage our collective guilt, it is vital to point out that published scientific studies also make a case for driving more, burning more coal, and breeding more flatulent cows. The reason: Global warming will make you happier, healthier and even sexier.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a recognized psychiatric disorder due to low levels of summer sunshine. SAD or the "winter blues" involves: depression fatigue hypersomnolence (over-sleeping) hyperphagia (overeating) carbohydrate craving weight gain and loss of libido (sexual desire) In other words, lack of sunshine can make you fat, miserable, sleepy and unsexy.

The predictable result is an increase in heart disease, suicide risk, poor sexual relationships, and general misery. Just a small rise in worldwide temperature could dramatically raise the world's level of happiness and even sexual desire. In a world of six billion people, tens of millions of sufferers might be rescued from SAD with only a small temperature rise.

Why do retirees move to Florida and Arizona? For the sunshine, of course. What will increase sunny days all over the planet? Global warming will!

assume for even one moment that there is truth to the outrageous lie that mankind is dangerously warming the planet

china is exempt from draconian measures to alter man's behavior

with over 1 billion chinese and skyrocketing economic upheaval, how many new cars, trucks, manufacturers, power plants, businesses, homes etc. will be added to china over the next 20 years, and with what impact on the planet using the metrics of the green faux scientists?

what will the west's drop in the bucket save? what will self-annihilation prove?

Hrm... this article means well, but I wonder if the author really means to imply that global warming will bring more hours of daylight during the winter. The only thing global warming will do is to make it more pleasant to be out of doors during the winter but that will not help the cubicle-bound who only get to see daylight on weekends.

I think in order for the globe to warm, there has to be less clouds. This would affect those affected by SAD even if they don't get out that much.
Besides, I think I detected a note of sarcasm in the article.

The goal of liberals is to make everyone equally miserable.
The only happy people should be the rich bureaucrats that can buy carbon credits.
Of course, we would still have certain talk show hosts that would be having "more fun than a human being should be allowed to have."

How, exactly? Clouds trap heat. A warmer planet will put more moisture in the air. Regardless, "warm" is a function of infrared, the remedy for SAD is in the ultraviolet. Plus you actually have to go stand outside in it. The only thing warm will buy in winter is more days that are pleasant enough to be outside, if you're lucky enough to be able to go outside during the daylight hours. This will backfire, of course, in the summertime because it will be too unpleasant to be outside when the sun is shining.

I don't ever recall a really hot day when it was cloudy. Humid and uncomfortable yes, but hot comes from sunshine. Clouds reflect heat back out. They may trap heat and keep it from getting colder at night but definitely do not contribute to heating the surface of the earth.

Yes, hot comes from sunshine. No question. No doubt. However, constituent atmospheric gases, such as water vapor, prevent insolation from reradiating out. Water vapor stores enormous amounts of heat energy. This is called the greenhouse effect. It is very basic science. If you're interested in the mechanics of the process or the actual radiation budget, any introductory physical geography text should do. Heck, wikipedia probably has it covered.

I understand greenhouse effect. In fact, I know there would be no greenhouse effect without the sun.

Ok, to oversimplify...

hot comes from sunshine
Amazing the things you learn can on Free Republic.

there would be no greenhouse effect without the sun
Not exactly. There would be no insolation without the sun. There would be no greenhouse effect without the atmosphere. Without the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the energy would be radiated back into space. The earth would not grow warmer with "less clouds" (sic). Read up on Stefan-Boltzmann. Again, any introductory physical geography or physics book will do.

Clouds reflect heat back out.
They reflect a relatively small amount of shortwave insolation (see Albedo). Many wavelengths can penetrate clouds - including the visible band, UV, and higher. This is why it is possible to see and get a sunburn even on a cloudy day. Is it possible to have cloud cover so dense that the temperature drops? Certainly, but local conditions are not necessarily representative of the global mean. And certainly, too, drops in temperature will also drop the saturated vapor pressure - voila. Rain. The uneven heating of the earth's surface (due to the fact that it is round) keeps the bodies of air moving around. On the global scale, it's a self-regulating system.

They [clouds] may trap heat and keep it from getting colder at night
They, in fact, *do* absorb and reemit longer wavelengths - infrared. Otherwise known as heat.

but [clouds] definitely do not contribute to heating the surface of the earth
The 'heating' of which you speak comes from the conversion of short wavelengths to long wavelengths. This happens at the molecular level on earth's surface. So in a way, the earth heats itself by converting those wavelengths. That wonderful warm feeling of sunlight on skin is not heat from the sun, but rather the conversion of UV to heat within the skin. The same happens at the molecular level within the atmosphere. So while clouds do not emit short wavelengths like the sun, they do emit long wavelengths (otherwise known as heat).

You seem to share the same confusion as the author (which he may be feigning to some degree for tounge-in-cheek effect). "Heat" is not the sum total of sunlight. "Heat" is not the wavelength that creates Vitamin D in the skin and affects seasonal mood disorders. Ultraviolet does that. Short wavelengths. Global warming won't change the biochemistry of that simple fact.

So unless you can make the case that global warming will increase the UV output of the sun during the winter or that the total amount of solar insolation will increase during the winter, or increase the number of daylight hours in a winter day, the idea that SAD would be affected by global warming is just ... silly.

Yup you say it right on your homepage, you are a smart aleck.
I still would say that since most greenhouse effect is caused by water vapor, and heat causes water to vaporize, that the sun causes it's own greenhouse effect. So, more sunshine= more greenhouse effect. If the earth was completely covered with clouds we would have another ice age. They say that an asteroid striking the earth many years ago caused the earth to become cold thereby killing off the dinosaurs. What do you think would cause "nuclear winter"? It certainly would not be because of all the sunlight getting through. And the blocking of the sun would cause the cold even though there was plenty of what you would call greenhouse style clouds.

Now you're confusing particulates with gases. Hint: they're entirely different.

Scientific illiteracy is endemic in this country and is the main reason people are so quick to believe this anthropogenic climate change clap trap. It comes from, in large part, believing everything your 3rd grade teacher told you in science class.

By all means, continue to enlighten us with your ad hoc cosmology. Seriously. You are embarassing yourself.

You seem to think that I believe this "Climate change Claptrap". I do not.
You also seem to have a very high opinion of yourself, and as of your last comments, I do not. I can see why you did not succeed as a teacher.
You seem to think that I don't have any scientific knowledge, but I do know how greehouse effect works. You don't need clouds for greenhouse effect. Have you ever been in a greenhouse? It is warmer inside when the sun is shining and clouds do not make it warmer no matter what the outside temperature is.
If you were teaching in my school, I would have you fired for beig an AH.
Bye.
