Michelle Malkin writes:
Ann Coulter just finished her riff on Al Gore, tossed out some cute jokes ("You can understand why Hollywood is concerned about global warming. You know what heat does to plastic."), and ended with a cheap one-liner about John Edwards being a "faggot." (Paraphrasing) She said she would refrain from commenting on Edwards because "if you say faggot, you have to go to rehab."
A smattering of laughter.
Not from this corner.
Crickets chirping.
Flashback Last year's bomb about "ragheads."
Bryan at Malkin's Hot Air:
Im no fan of John Edwards, but thats just a stupid joke. Its over the line. The laughter it generated across the room was more than a little annoying.
Last year it was raghead. This year its calling John Edwards a faggot. Two years in a row, Coulter has finished up an otherwise sharp CPAC routine with an obnoxious slur that liberals will fling at conservatives for years to come.
Thanks, Ann.
The Captain of Captain's Quarters opined
Yeah, that's just what CPAC needs -- an association with homophobia. Nice work, Ann.
At some point, Republicans will need to get over their issues with homosexuality. Regardless of whether one believes it to be a choice or a hardwired response, it has little impact on anyone but the gay or lesbian person. We can argue that homosexuality doesn't require legal protection, but not when we have our front-line activists referring to them as "faggots" or worse. That indicates a disturbing level of animosity rather than a true desire to allow people the same rights and protections regardless of their lifestyles.
Ann Coulter can be an entertaining and incisive wit. Unfortunately, she can also be a loose cannon, and CPAC might want to consider that the next time around.
Mary Katharine Ham of Townhall.com's one-liner
You shouldn't have to go to psych eval for using it, but it's a nasty word. Just don't.
Sean Hackbarth of The American Mind:
Ann Coulter almost made it through her CPAC speech without looking like a complete buffoon. She wasnt funny, she rarely is, but shes an attention whore. Near the end of her speech she said she wouldnt talk about John Edwards because you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot. Shes now on non-speaking terms with any gay and lesbian friends.
Are these bloggers right in criticizing Ann Coulter, or is it a case of being over-sensitive because of the expected criticism from the Left?
They are way over sensitive and I think what she said is funny.
I think it was bad form on Ann's part. It was calculated behavior on her part.
Live by the mouth, die by the mouth.
But, hey, Ann, if you need mouth-to-mouth, cell me...
You asked -- "Are these bloggers right in criticizing Ann Coulter, or is it a case of being over-sensitive because of the expected criticism from the Left?"
Well..., it's all about image. She could have said the same thing to the same people, apart from a public stage and they would have been laughing their heads off. But, in the public glare, they're running scared of the "f*gs". What a bunch of weenies... What can you say?
Regards,
Star Traveler
Ann Coulter's style is certainly not mine ... but the quivering squeamishness of these commentators is over the top.
The upshot is that one is not allowed to express any disapproval or disrespect toward homosexuals.
If you say faggot you have to go to rehab. LOL It's true.
Reminds me of Sean Penn's famous line: "They're all fags, mannnnnn !!!!!"
What does anybody go to hear at an Ann Coulter speech? They want something provocative. They want her to push the envelope. When I see equal protection for Conservative Straight White Men as far as public criticism in speeches, then I will worry about someone calling someone a faggot.
I wonder what would have happend if she had said "girly man" instead of "faggot." I don't think these people would have reacted the same way.
That is freaking funny.
I too run against some of the FR grain....I understand and actually agree with Ann's underlying concepts but have always thought of her as crass and over the top.... She is just too crude and though it has made her millions, I would not emulate her.....ever....
I would have said "pansy".
Ann's a stand-up comedian, not a commentator. No one takes Dennis Miller seriously, so why does everyone listen so intently to Ann Coulter?
Yeah, that's just what CPAC needs -- an association with homophobia. Nice work, Ann.

"Yeah Ann! Thats MY job!"
In other news, the sun will come up in the East tomorrow, and Nancy Pelosi is a Woman.
I predict that Ann will end up being the only one this year that said something that "offended" someone and will not apologize for it. Go Ann "Kill their leaders and convert the rest of them to Christianity" , one of her best quotes ever.
From A Saint for the Church Militant - St. Gabriel Possenti
The man proposed that the two travel together for companionship. St. Gabriel Possenti agreed. As they passed an abandoned shack, the stranger accosted the saint, suggesting actions for which God obliterated Sodom and Gomorrah.
"You fiend," St. Gabriel cried as he brandished his hunting knife. "If you touch me I'll stick you through."
The assailant fled without further prompting.
Hey! It's OK with me and it's also OK with me when they wet their pants. A little poo-poo is OK with me too, as long as I don't have to stand around and smell it.
She's a smoker, what do think her mouth smells like?
I get more uncomfortable reading the mealy-mouthed opinions of these bloggers than Ann Coulter's remark.
By skirting around a comment about the power of the homosexual lobby, they prove the power of the homosexual lobby.
Uh, he's not?
Hey, what Ann says is up to Ann.
I'm just not sure of her intended target, I mean John Edwards might be a lot of things, but I doubt that he's a faggot.
Now John F'in Kerry? No, he's probably not a faggot, but DEFINITELY a ***MAGGOT*** !!!!
I thought that a "faggot" was a piece of wood used in steamboat torches.
They should get over themselves. Ann has a fire tongue and we should've been fighting fire with fire a loooooong time ago GO ANN!!!!!
BTW, faggot doesn't have to mean a gay man....
-PJ
Someone has to come out and say it. Ann is an idiot who is interested in herself, not conservatism. It's time this "harpie" was treating with the same disdain as David Duke. We're better off without the being associated with the likes of her, Pat Buchanon, and David Duke.
Seems to me that she should have used the opportunity to criticize him for an actual failing instead of throwing out an insult that is easily dismissed. I'm no comedian but why not craft a joke that pokes fun at the guy for going on & on about poverty while living in a lavish mansion or modify one of the millions of trial lawyer jokes that are available. Something along the lines of the purple heart band-aids for Kerry. Why waste your time in front of the audience and cameras resorting to the same insults heard on every playground at lunch time. I don't care that she has offended homosexuals - I care that she couldn't create something more sophisticated than taunts used by an average middle school student.
You people saying "Go Ann Go" are missing the point. Conservatives are supposed to be the grown ups. Leave the profanity spewing for no reason to the lefties.
Mouthwash is a great invention...
Who cares? Whether right or wrong, they have shown themselves to exactly the same brand of prune-faced PC apologists as their left-wing counterparts.
I guess it was inevitable that once the right-wing blogosphere began to take itself as seriously as the left-wing media, they would turn into the same kind of self-aggrandizing jerks, looking down their very long noses at anyone of whom they disapprove.
Coulter should tell every single one of them to walk straight to Hell.
I agree. I was there last year for the raghead comment. She said if they're going to fly airplanes into our buildings and murder us by the thousands, then she's going to call them ragheads. So there!
As for Edwards, anyone who's seen those pictures of him and Kerry being lovey-dovey certainly has to wonder.....
I love her books but she definitely goes overboard with some of her comments.
She went over the line. Leave the vulgarity on the Left.
Oh yeah, and your association with an assortment of fascists and neo-Marxists like Bush, McCain, and Giuliani serves you so much better.
Get over yourself.
Mike Reagan said he is gonna talk about this story coming up at Reagan.Com
She certainly does. And that's why I'm such a big fan of hers.
GO ANN GO!!
My only problem with Ann is that I can't make up my mind ..... would I rather see her as VP and Rush as President? Or her in the White House and Rush as VP?
Decisions decisions.....
Don't bother...
If tomorrow she said "I'm the daughter of Satan and Lily Tomlin", they'd still cheer.
Gee: 64 years old and never knew "faggot" was a profanity.
It wasn't spewing, and it wasn't profanity
She made her point about Edwards with very few words.
She intimated that Gore was gay a few months ago, and it was brought out in an interview with Chris Matthews on TV.
Sometimes I despair for civilized society.
Ann Coulter says lots of things I wish I'd thought of first. Short things, but...
Anyway, the trouble with Ann C., insofar as there's any trouble, is that a loose cannon is going to bust right out of the ship and sink in the briny deep, you don't know just when.
She says outrageous things. Fine, that's her shtick and it puts food on the table (?) But one day she will meet her macaca. The Dems are all waiting and hoping for the right spark to make a conflagration.
And here she's bringing "faggots."
Please be careful, Ms. Coulter. Be Ann, but be careful!
How many Congressional seats did we lose because of Rush's comments about Michael J Fox?
Yeah, we need to strive to associate ourselves with sensitive males, in the Clinton mold. How about Rudy? He seems like a sensitive guy who would never hurt the feelings of gays (by, for instance, doing something awful like wearing clothes that were last year's fashion). Someone whose voice can quake, lips tremble and eyes tear up in public. That's who we Republicans need to associate ourselves with!
