Overkill (New York Times defends Zumbo, Attacks FreeRepublic in Editorial)
New York Times ^ | 3/3/07 | NYT Editorial Board

Posted on 03/03/2007 1:13:46 PM PST by CondiRice08

A famous hunter and outdoorsman recently voiced misgivings about people who use assault rifles to kill prairie dogs. “Assault rifle” is a much touchier term. It is generally understood to be the kind of gun that soldiers use in wars and terrorists use on the evening news. But the gun lobby despises “assault rifle,” considering it a false, scary label tacked onto perfectly legitimate weapons by people who want to take away others’ rights. That is a debate for another day. “Excuse me, maybe I’m a traditionalist,” he wrote, “but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity.” He added: “To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let’s divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the prairies and woods.” Until he wrote that, Mr. Zumbo was one of the most admired hunters in America, a widely read magazine writer with his own cable TV program and lots of lecture appearances and corporate sponsorships. He of all people should have known that “ban” is the mother of all fighting words to gun zealots. His 250-word posting caused a huge eruption on gun blogs, and Mr. Zumbo instantly became their second-most-hated man, after the gun-control advocate James Brady. He lost his blog, was dumped by Outdoor Life magazine and was disowned by the National Rifle Association, after 40 years of membership. His corporate sponsors, including the gunmaker Remington, ditched him. His cable show was canceled. The N.R.A. issued a chilling statement warning Congress to take heed of Mr. Zumbo’s fate. By the time Blaine Harden told his story in The Washington Post, Mr. Zumbo was professionally dead. The paranoia and gloating that Mr. Zumbo’s name has evoked on gun discussion boards like ar15.com and freerepublic.com speak for themselves.p>

Like who cares what kind of a gun they use bub? Afterall, the ground hog is dead either way.

You're not on board with the "mindset".

It goes something like this:

1. A bullet fired from a bolt-action rifle in .223 that kills a ground hog = OK

2. A bullet fired from a semi-auto military-style rifle in .223 that kills a ground hog = EVIL. The gun and shooter are EVIL, and furthermore, a menace to society. The gun should be confiscated and the owner thrown in prison for life.

Got it?

Watch for a new left-wing phrase, soon to become common usage:

"He's been Zumbo'd."

That is close to what he said but here is the actual quote:

"Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them “terrorist” rifles. … Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern."

The BOLD parts are what caused Zumbo the problem, and he has not taken that back in any appology. Every article defending him I have seen has left that part out.

Well, yes, he should have.

"Gun zealots" translates to "gun enthusiasts", and gun enthusiasts are precisely who buys the guy's magazine. You would think someone who made his living off of "gun enthusiasts" would know that.

Sounds like he has a Dixie Chick mania.

Probably a big fan of their "escort" here, too!

I own semi autos for shooting target and self defence.I will not hunt with them tho. That is a traditionalist way of thinking. Most of my hunting is done with traditional muzzleloaders or bolt and break action rifles. If someone else wants to use them thats fine with me.In my state[yes I own it ] of PA semi loader shot guns are legal but rifles are not.

The NYT has an agenda and that is to do whatever they can to contribute to the demise of the "Red States"....and the Gun Owners of America.

The NYT represents all that is horrible about liberal thinking....and they could never understand why we conservatives are the way we are...they just see us as the enemy.

Ok...so be it...

Zumbo screwed up in that he bought into the leftest mind set...that its not ok to own certain weapons...not that some idiot used a semi-automatic for rodent overkill.

It looks like the Second Amendment will be the crucible over which America chooses to survive or becomes the new western EU....that event which will be resisted in the extreme by us conservatives.

I have indeed! It's among the three zillion other lists on just about every possible topic here on the "gun discussion board"!

Those semi-autos are for hunting game, all right; just not the game you'll usually find in the woods. They're more for hunting tyrants. That's what's got the gun banners so worried.

"When the Government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the Government, there is tyranny."

-Thomas Jefferson-

"If someone is so fearful that they're going to start using their weapons to protect their rights, makes me very nervous that these people have weapons at all!"

-Representative Henry A. Waxman, (D-CA)

a pity about Zumbo (rhymes with..) however if you are going to stab members of 2nd amendment fraternity in the back, tehy may not care for the feeling and they may even *gasp* DO something about it.

He was a public figure making public statements that disparaged fellow gun owners. I am not happy that his career has taken such a hit, but you writes your words and you takes your chances....

Jim,

You should send the NYT the mission statement from the home page about the principals FreeRepublic was founded on.

That would help to clear up their confusion about everything that Conservatives stand for.

Then you can explain that this is a REAL news forum that can discuss and analyze ALL topics in the news. ( even those they refuse to cover)

They would gasp at the fact that not only do we have a large membership that follows 2nd amendment news items, we have (Gasp) groups devoted to supporting the Troops and the military!

I haven't stumbled across the page devoted to "Taking down the Ditsy Chunks", but I do see them discussed here when they say really stupid, anti-American things.

They would be truly surprised what a real news forum should be, even though Rather, The Chunks, and Zumbo think it was only about them.

Of course the original posting on Zumbo's blog is incomplete. Read for yourself and judge. Here is the complete text:

Assault Rifles For Hunters?

As I write this, I'm hunting coyotes in southeastern Wyoming with Eddie Stevenson, PR Manager for Remington Arms, Greg Dennison, who is senior research engineer for Remington, and several writers. We're testing Remington's brand new .17 cal Spitfire bullet on coyotes.

I must be living in a vacuum. The guides on our hunt tell me that the use of AR and AK rifles have a rapidly growing following among hunters, especially prairie dog hunters. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these firearms.

I call them "assault" rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are "tackdrivers."

Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles. We've always been proud of our "sporting firearms."

This really has me concerned. As hunters, we don't need the image of walking around the woods carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the prairies and woods.

February 16, 2007 in Hunting

Notice how he calls them "terrorist weapons". As a soldier I didn't realize that I was using a terrorist weapon.
