BELLEFONTE, Pa. - Two 19-year-olds facing probation and community service or even jail time in the shooting of a steer considered a family pet took advantage of another option offered by the judge - joining the Navy.

Shooting an animal is not "cruelty," otherwise there would be millions of hunters in this country going to jail.
His Mom disagrees. "No child of mine is going to....yadda yadda yadda." No wonder the kid has discipline issues. And of course, no Dad on the scene.
I had another cousin who just got done his second hitch in Iraq - he's doing training in Kuwait, now. AND - I distinctly remember his father threatening that "He's 17 and if I have my say he might not make it to 18 if he gets in trouble like that again." The Army straightened his stuff out in good shape, he's a fine young man, now.
My father stole a car in 1953 and they sent him to the USMC.
My brother stole a car in 1981 and the Air Force took him.
I never stole a car and went Army, all the way !
Didn't need a judge or nothin' ;)
MISSIONARY (Candace Bergen): "Why did you chose the Navy?"
HOLMAN: "Well, there ain't much water in Utah."

The military may actually save these boys, but I would recommend sending them to the Marines. The Marines accept less crap and instill more discipline.
Before getting flamed, I am saying this as a prior member of the Navy attached to the Marines for 4 years.

'Joint or join'.......I know two guys who ended up in Vietnam that way.
Probably the best thing for them. Marine Corps Boot Camp is lots of fun too.
I think this was wonderful of the judge to give them this alternative. The story says they shot the steer while looking for deer. It is a very short article and doesn't give a lot of details. So, this could have been a careless accident.
I agree. One guy in my platoon was given the choice of jail or the Marines for a manslaughter charge. If anyone can straighten someone out, it's the Marine Corps. Semper Fi.
How about Rear Admiral Kilkenny, Commander, Naval Recruiting Command? 901-874-9018
How about the Master Chief Petty Office of the Navy (MCPON)?

I, for one, have always blindly assumed that it has been a good thing that the courts assisted recruiting by throwing some business our way. After all, how bout all those retired Marines--colonels even, etc.--who claimed that that was their path into the Corps!
Back in the Old Corps, many of us entering Parris Island, were kids from the lower socio-economic areas of America--an America that no longer exists, BTW. Today, the services only accept even the non--HS graduates that they do accept because they are forced to do so. I would like to see the armed forces go back to that, myself.
The question of the draft/conscription being a form of slavery, however, is widely addressed, and countless essays on this are posted to Ms Google. I have cited only one above--and I think that question and topic is worthy of attention.

When I joined the Marine Corps in the early 70's, there were alot of Marines that enlisted because they were ordered to by a judge. The choice was either 4 years in prison or 4 years in the Marines. The results were disastrous as you can imagine.

They shot a family pet and the Navy will take them? I cannot believe this. These are disturbed people - the perps, that is.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think the Navy (or any of our other armed forces) needs these losers.
I spent twenty-five years in the Navy and saw what happened when miscreants like these two reached the fleet. Not pretty.
As far as I'm concerned, I don't want these losers around the fine men and women that have voluntarily joined our armed forces and a doing a great job. They have enough problems to deal with right now.
Where can you find pleasure, search the world for treasure, learn science, technology?
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true on the land or on the sea?
Where can you learn to fly, play in sports or skindive, study oceanography?
Sign up for the big band or sit in the grand stand when your team and others meet.
In the Navy, yes, you can sail the seven seas.
In the Navy, yes, you can put your mind at ease.
In the Navy, come on now people, make a stand.
In the Navy, can't you see we need a hand.
In the Navy, come on, protect the motherland.
In the Navy, come on and join your fellow, man.
In the Navy, come on, people, and make a stand.
In the Navy, in the Navy.
Apparently this judge allowed them a choice as to what branch of the military they served in. Typically, a judge has the court call the local Marine recruiter telling him/her that they have a new prospective recruit ready to sign on the dotted line.
USAF won't take you if you have a conviction or are on deferred adjudication or disposition, as it's considered "the moral equivalent of a finding of guilt". Of course, we've always been more selective (he says, donning his Kevlar and yelling, "INcoming!!")
