p>North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr will endorse Sen. John McCain tomorrow in Charlotte, bringing to nine the number of endorsements the Arizonan has racked up from his colleagues. With Burr's support, McCain has now more than doubled the number of fellow senators endorsing his bid from 2000.
More impressive are the sort of senators Team McCain is rolling out. Trent Lott, John Warner and Richard Burr have all had their differences with the maverick over the years; Lott on campaign finance reform, among other things, and Warner and Burr on tobacco.
Indeed, McCain's efforts to raise the tax on cigarettes and bring FDA regulation over tobacco incurred the wrath of the Winston-Salem native during the 2000 campaign. Said then-Rep. Burr at the time: "The Southeast never forgets anyone who affects their livelihood."
Well, two senators from the two of the largest tobacco-growing states in the region, North Carolina and Virginia, are now on board with McCain. Both endorsed President Bush in 2000, as did Lott and Sen. John Thune, another recent backer of McCain. Congressional endorsements don't translate into primary votes, but when a figure like McCain gets em from the likes of Burr, Warner, Lott and Thune it does raises eyebrows.
((((((PING))))
Senator Burr just lost a supporter when (and if) he runs for re-election.
Strange that all these people are jumping on the McCain bandwagon. I could see them jumping on the Duncan Hunter Bandwagon but not McCain.
Not to be outdone, Liddy Dole will announce an endorsement of Rudy Guiliani right after her afternoon hair, nail and facial appointment.
They aren't jumping on a bandwagon, they are jumping onto a sinking ship. Burr is making a serious miscalculation, and it appears he hasn't talked to any of his constituents, and tells me that something else is going on behind the curtains.
McCain is trying to rally from his latest defeats, like the young dragon slayer in Steven Leacock's novel: 'Upon being excited by just being knighted by the Queen, he ran out of the castle, jumped on his horse and rode off in all directions.'
Damn, that is really disappointing.
I worked very hard for him in 2004 and I think he's making a big mistake.
I truly doubt Libby Dole will support Rudy. More than likely Romney. Not many Senators will endorse Rudy. They are too scared to.
I hope you will tell him that. I certainly will give him an ear full.
I figured he, like Jim DeMint, would have endorsed Mitt Romney.

It's like when Pat Dewine, son of Senator Mike Dewine of Ohio ran for an open congressional seat. Pat Dewine had ALL the Washinton support including Lott, had a huge war-chest and had the Dewine name.
He came in 4th in the primary run-off.
I would not worry too much about the Washington insiders support of Mccain.
The wheels of his Straight Talk Express has already come off.
Well, they have to live with McCain after he loses, not Hunter. John McCain will be in the Senate long after he loses in the primaries. That means that his fellow Senators can always support him now, knowing it won't really change anything, but will keep this 'maverick' on good terms. That's not bad politics at all.
It isn't surprising - Senators have proven over and over again that they are more loyal to each other than to any political ideal.
I think you nailed it, friend. By getting on the "Straight Talk Exporess" just before it derails, these guys can get brownie points for showing loyalty to an old senate colleague and then bail when it becomes so painfully obvious that the rank and file won't go along.
I agree with you there. Senators and Congressmen are self-serving egomaniacs.
I don't understand how the world works any more.
Oh, I'll tell him all right. I can't for the life of me see why he'd do this.
Despair ping.
