Why Rudy?
Pittsburgh Tribune Review ^ | March 10, 2007 | Salena Zito

Posted on 03/10/2007 5:42:54 AM PST by veronica

For the moment, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani sits on double-digit leads over the rest of the Republican presidential-hopeful pack in several national polls.

Why?

"It appears to me that Rudy is going aggressively after the conservative vote," says Pennsylvania Republican and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum. "He has not ceded that ground to anybody."

Santorum, known nationally for his social conservatism, says Giuliani does a good job of reminding people how he governed as a conservative on crime, welfare and taxes in New York City.

Santorum also believes Giuliani has scored points on social issues with his comments about judges and Supreme Court justices.

"Rudy understands that, on those issues, the courts are where conservatives have been losing the battle," he says. "If he is going to be appointing judges in the Scalia-Thomas (mold), then he is sending a very positive message to conservatives that he understands the importance of having the Constitution interpreted for what it says and not for what people want it to be."

So Rudy was once Time's 'Person Of The Year', whoopee. Last year I WAS Time's 'Person Of The Year'.

Which reminds me of something Groucho Marx once said;

"I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member."
In English that means Rudy being Time's Person Of The Year is ... worthless.

An aside, Hitler was once Time's 'Person Of The Year' too. Rudy's in company there. Both egomaniac, psychotic, control freak, whack jobs.

You condemn these people that condemn you - yet - at least in this thread - the Rudy supporters seem to be in unison with their condemnation of Duncan supporters. It all seems so petty & immature - can't we just support who we want without being called names?

I'm not going to mud wrestle - if everyone that claims to be so offended by the other side doing it would just stop doing it - maybe we could have some intelligent debates.

That is your interpretation, yes. Also note that part of the Santorium reference is paraphrased and not quoted. Santorium could have been very clear on what he said either way; but since it isn't quoted, we don't know.

The wording is reminding people, and not an acknowledgment that Giuliani governed as a conservative.

LOL, Buchanan never had a chance and he knew it. He was just hoping to push the GOP platform in a direction he more approved of, nothing more and nothing less.

Plus, Pat really wasn't looking forward to actually having to learn the words to 'Deutchsland uber Alles'. LOL

"It appears to me that Rudy is going aggressively after the conservative vote,"

A new kind of cross-dressing for Rudy.

Once again Veronica, if it's the truth, it's not SPAM. And it gives you another excuse to post one of your Rudy-idol graphics.

Well, if you look at recent election results and Bush's poll numbers, the GOP is at risk of becoming a regional Confederate party. Democrats are moving out of New England into Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and they're making gains in the plains in places like Montana, Missouri, and Colorado.

Some people think we're losing because we're not conservative enough, as if what sells in Alabama or Idaho sells elsewhere. Branding ourselves as a bunch of mean, angry know-nothings like Ann Coulter is not the way to win national elections.

We need to get back to basics the Republican Party has always had from Lincoln to McKinley to Eisenhower to Reagan -- defense, free enterprise, Constitutional government. We've fallen off track, and the focus on nonsense from Terri Schiavo to stemcells to creationism to rabid calls for mass deportations simply isn't getting the job done. If anything, they alienate voters like Latinos and suburbanites where the GOP has a natural constituency.

I don't think there is a 'perfect' Republican candidate; whomever is able to keep the WH out of the hands of the Clintons again, is the one for me.

I like Hunter a lot. It will be interesting to see who comes to the fore as Potus and VPotus. If he/they can suck up some Dem votes, more power to him.
