Giuliani leads McCain by 16 percentage points, a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll finds.

WASHINTON (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has opened up a double-digit lead over Arizona Sen. John McCain in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out Monday indicates.

Thirty-four percent of registered Republicans support Giuliani, while 18 percent support McCain, the poll finds. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are each tied at nine percent in the poll.

In a similar CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted at the end of January, McCain trailed Giuliani by only six percentage points, registering 26 percent to Giuliani's 34 percent.

Thompson MUST get in now. There is no rationale for him to further support John McCain.

"Rudy Giuliani was in my neck of the woods today, Chicago.

He was praising our Liberal Mayor, and many of his Liberal policies. The man was openly campaigning with the Democratic Mayor of Chicago."

You forgot to mention that President Bush does the exact same thing when he comes to town. It is widely known that he and our liberal mayor are friends. It's amazing how you and I can look at the same event and see two different things.

President Bush has some Conservative street cred, Rudy does not.

I don’t know how Rudy always manages to be in the wrong (right) place at the right (wrong) time. First in the middle of 9/11 and then this battle between the social and fiscal conservatives.

The fact that your list does not have Huckabee crossed out renders it null and void.

Let me help you:

Huckabee

Nanny state politicians have no business claiming to be Conservatives.

I agree with your stance of looking past any disagreement on social issues, towards the bigger picture, the candidate who can best protect and lead us during the fight against terrorism.

I don't think Rudy wanted to pick every fight he possibly could. And in NY, not kissing certain butts means picking a fight. He had to choose his battles. I know that's a cliche, but there's often a lot of truth to it.

The main question is what he really thinks of this stuff, not whether he kissed some butts years ago. Though I admit, it's not good.

I'm still carbon/candidate neutral. Without naming names, lets suppose we had two faceless candidates A and B:

Candidate A promises to protect me and my family from getting blown up by an islamofascist with a dirty nuke and lets us keep our hard earned money.

Candidate B promises to protect me and my family from ever hearing the word "penis" on the radio or accidentally seeing a nipple during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Who would you vote for? A or B?

You obviously don't understand American politics.

If you support a full fledged liberal to be the GOP nominee for 2008, you've betrayed conservatism on all counts, you're assisting in the destruction of the GOP and moving the Republic one step closer to socialism.

That is, if you were a conservative to start with.

If you're not a conservative and you support a full fledged liberal candidate to be the GOP nominee for 2008, you're undermining conservatism, assisting in the destruction of the GOP and taking America one step closer to socialism.

Hope that helps you out.

"So you are seriously calling areafiftyone a "commie." This is what you're telling me."

I don't think he(?) used the term "commie", However one could infer the term "stupid" or "liberal".

"Again, this strikes me as pretty trivial"

Perhaps, but when you combine it with being "pro-choice" and "pro-gun control", it is not trivial. Rudy is a liberal. And don't give me that fiscal conservative crap. Bill Clinton was that... I was able to squirrel away 500K while he was president.

The only thing Rudy has going for him is the WOT. He's the guy who got the bloody nose on 9-11, of course he talks tough. For that matter, Hillary may be the toughest on terror if elected. If she doesn't demonstrate that she has more testosterone than any man in that position, she would be the last female CIC for the next 100 years. Don't think she doesn't know that...

You equate Rudy with 9/11 and nothing else. There has to be more to the President than that. I agree Rudy did a great job after 9/11, he kept his wits about him and showed great leadership. However, there is more to running the country than that. As I've asked before, what is his plan and what makes him better for the WOT than anyone else?

That's what I'm hoping will happen, and soon.

It's actually rather embarrassing for McCain to go out this way.
