The former senator and "Law and Order" actor Fred Thompson is being mentioned as a possible presidential candidate. Mr. Thompson has said he will keep an open mind about a 2008 campaign.
In a recent interview, he blasted the reputation of Mahatma Gandhi, the most overrated man in the 20th century and one whose name now graces a building at James Madison University.
Sen. Thompson noted that the anti-war group Code Pink had unveiled a giant paper mache model of Gandhi at one of their peace rallies, so gave this bit of history.
"During World War II, Gandhi penned an open letter to the British people, urging them to surrender to the Nazis. Later, when the extent of the holocaust was known, he criticized Jews who had tried to escape or fight for their lives as they did in Warsaw and Treblinka. "The Jews should have offered themselves to the butchers knife," he said. "They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs.
"The so-called peace movement certainly has the right to make Gandhis way their way, but their efforts to make collective suicide American foreign policy just wont cut it in this country. When Americans think of heroism, we think of the young American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, risking their lives to prevent another Adolph Hitler or Saddam Hussein.
"Gandhi probably wouldnt approve, but I can live with that," Thompson said.
Sen. Thompson is an actor who doesnt need a script to be coherent. Hes intelligent without one. You cant say that about a lot of people in Hollywood.
Oh, Oh. He's thinking for himself. That ought to irritate the media and the Democrats.
Ping!!!!
I have to say, he's more and more becoming the man I would like to vote for.
the most overrated man in the 20th century
is by far NELSON MANDELA
So, if Sen, Thompson doesn`t run , you are giving your vote to Hillorat.
Shoot 'em down, Fred.

I bet the MSM will go ballistic over that statement. And all the [insertnamehere]Bots will jump all over it as...'unstatesman' or some such nonsense.
Hillary, Hussein, Rudy...what's the difference?
Very impressive. Blasting the other side instead of offering cheeks.
If the difference is beyond your comprehension, you may want to consider reading more and becoming better informed so you will be able to distinguish the difference.
"The truth is out there".
IMHO, Gandhi was a great man, but I agree he was vastly overrated. No one ever looks at the real result of Gandhi's leadership in removing the UK from India- civil war and tens (if not hundreds) of thousands dead. Even now, we have India and Pakistan on the verge of nuclear war with each other.
Hindsight, however, is almost always clearer, and we have no idea what would have happened had the leaders (India & UK) had known what would have happened as a result of their actions.
"Gandhi probably wouldnt approve, but I can live with that," Thompson said.
Great quote...would make a great tagline........
I doubt we will be fortune enough to get Fred Thompson, but I sure hope so!
Very impressive. Blasting the other side instead of offering cheeks.
Rudy has an (R) next to his name. That makes all his liberalism ok.

I'm with you. BTW, the latter ticket might get some drugged up libs to vote GOP ;-)
"Oh wow, man, like, I thought that Gonzo journalism dude was dead... whoah..."
I'm not doubting Fred, but does anyone have a verified source for the Gandhi quote?
Thompson's 100% correct and will make a great President.
