Thanks Lady. Our cats only eat dry food... They don't know what wet food even looks like.
What brand do you use? Do they make cat food?
Then switch to canned..... /s
I have heard that it is both the wet and dry that have used this particular suppliers wheat.
Please, before you poo poo this whole story, read the rest of it. THOUSANDS have been ill, and so far only 10 have died. If the thousands affected had kidney failure, they'll all die lots sooner, even if they recover somewhat. Perhaps you don't have pets--people who don't have them don't see what all the fuss is about. Those of us who do, know they are some of the best friends a human could ever have, and if something should happen to them, we'll grieve terribly.
Either this story is wrong, or Menu Foods isn't telling us the whole story, because nowhere on their site do they list any foods by Nestle or Purina. Infuriating, either way.
Local news said the recall list is now at 50 brands!
I've been giving them either Friskies or 9 Lives, will be glad when it's cleared up as to whether they are involved or not.
The MSM has done it's job well if the comments on this forum are any indication. BTW, new pup a year old, eats Science Diet Adult and there's no screaming and running around in circles in this household.
From their site:
St. Louis, Missouri, March 16, 2007 . . . . Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced that as a precautionary measure, it is voluntarily withdrawing its 5.3 ounce Mighty Dog® brand pouch products that were produced by Menu Foods, Inc. from December 3, 2006 through March 14, 2007. This withdrawal is in response to the recall initiated earlier today by Menu Foods, a contract manufacturer that does limited business with Purina as well as with other pet food manufacturers. Only Mighty Dog 5.3 ounce pouch products are being withdrawn by Nestlé Purina, including those pouches contained in multi-packs. Importantly, no Mighty Dog canned products, or any other Purina products are affected by Menus recall.
Some cats cannot digest wheat gluten. Long haired black domestics are often so affected. Just as cats specificaly need the amino acid taurine, some cannot digest the amino acid glutamine.
We do not need the amino acid asparagine, so it spills over through the kidneys, producing the well known "After eating asparagus" effect.
If a cat has a defective means of ridding itself of glutamine, acute kidney failure can result. With my cat, she breaks out in a rash, and her hair starts falling out. This happens because she is a wily, crafty GLUTTON who spends all her (FEW) waking hours plotting to steal the other cats' non-special food.
I've heard it's only we canned and pouched.
Which is it? Wet only or wet & dry?
Where'd you get "thousands?"
Every story that I've read
says one dog, nine cats,
and not one story
I have read says "thousands" sick.
Try breathing deeply . . .
OMG, someone let me know if they ever mention Little Caesar.
Get over yourself. ABC news on GMA reported "thousands."
Thank you--I only use cat food, so I was concerned. Fancy Feast has some cuts and gravy varieties, and I feed these to my three cats as a treat sometimes. I don't know if I will continue doing that--they haven't named FF yet, but they keep adding brands.
