Baptist: Giuliani won't get our votes

A top leader in the Southern Baptist Convention predicted that former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani would not succeed in winning the votes of Southern Baptists if he were to become the Republican nominee for president in 2008.

In brief comments after a chapel service at the North Carolina legislature on Wednesday, Richard Land, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, said former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich would likely fail for the same reason.

"Three is one marriage too many for them," said Land, referring to the 16.4 million members of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant group. Both Giuliani and Gingrich have been married three times.

A friend and adviser to President Bush, Land keeps close watch on politics as head of the commission, which studies moral, social, and religious liberty issues for the convention.

Though Southern Baptists are independent and do not necessarily follow his counsel, Land said three others who have already entered the presidential fray were more likely to win support among Southern Baptists. Those three are Sam Brownback, a Republican Senator from Kansas, Michael Huckabee, the former Republican governor of Arkansas, and Duncan Hunter, Republican Congressman from California.

As for Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, who is a Mormon, Land didn't rule him out. But, he said, the Republican hopeful has to convince the American people that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints won't dictate his policy. Land said he met with Romney recently and told him: "That's not a hill that can't be climbed. But you're going to have to climb it."

Finally, Land said he sensed that U.S. Senator John McCain was perceived as a wild card.

"People are uncomfortable with his predictability," said Land. "They tell me, 'We don't know how he's going to come down on the issues.'"

"Southern Baptists who won't vote for an Italian Catholic....I'll alert the media."

I'm a Southern Baptist and I have no problem with Bible-believing Catholics or with Italians. I'd vote for anybody whose positions were not inimical to mine.

Land and his crowd would rather have Hillary and her den run the show.

Land and his crowd are the REAL closet liberals.

"Because he's a good friend of the Pope. You're joking, right?"

Of course not. I didn't think it needed a disclaimer. But it was in response to an obnoxious post regarding excommunication.

It's not ONLY abortion. Rudy Giuliani is on the wrong side of most conservative Republicans with:

-Abortion
-Partial Birth Abortion
-Amnesty for Illegal Border Invaders
-Homosexual Civil Unions and/or Marriages
-Global Warming
-Gun Control / 2nd Amendment Rights

Please understand that different voters have different priorities on the list above. I reject Rudy Giuliani because of the entire package. He is not a conservative.

CORRECTION: Of course I am. I didn't think it needed a disclaimer. But it was in response to an obnoxious post regarding excommunication

I suppose the Southern Baptists will happily vote for once-married Hillary Rodham Clinton in the upcoming election.

No. There are plenty of folk's here that would vote for "it", should "it" put an "R" by "it's" name. Would you be one of "those"? Blackbird.

I am Catholic and a woman who has an abortion is automatically excommunicated by the seriousness of the sin. And for those who believe they are not in serious sin and therefore not publicly excommunicated are still answerable to God,so no one gets out of anything Catholic or not. There are many priests and pastors out there who are not leading their flock towards God but instead leading them straight to hell. And heck that's if they even believe in hell or sin anymore. I have seen a drastic change in attitude from this forum and at times question just how conservative people are. Maybe everyone is just fed up with so little to hope for in the candidates that are out there and who can win. The idea of Hillery,I think a lot of the dems hate her as much as we do,or Rudi winning make me sad and sick to my stomach.

I wanted to say something similar to that yesterday when I was told that Rudy Giuliani was not excommunicated because he was friends with the Pope. That still wouldn't get past God, would it? :-)

Do you really believe that stupid answer? Priest and pastors are suppose to lead their flocks, not be cowards. But God sees sin and any Catholic or any sinner will not go to heaven if they are leading a serious sinful life. How many times did Jesus preach about repenting. And how many times does the Pope preach on repenting. So any of these Catholic,or any other person, needs to repent and not continue to promote and support abortion. This country has lost MILLIONS of children through abortion and many women have suffered greatly as well. But it is up to the local Bishops in the area who can publicly excommunicate a politician who supports abortion and unfortunately they do not love the sinner enough to discipline them. And yes they are cowards because they understand the gravity of sin of abortion.

Of course not, I just didn't want to turn an otherwise intelligent political discussion into a religious dogfight.

Well, I'm not sure Guiliani's wife was exactly sitting home waiting for her man - as I recall she was starring in the infamous V Monologues. But I also recall the way he appeared to flaunt his relationship with the woman he later married, and the way he informed his second wife of the divorce.

What the heck are you blathering about?

That "blackmail" is how voting works. People are allowed to choose who they will vote for, you know.

I'm familiar with the ins and outs of politics, I was fortunate to learn about politics at a very early age when most kids watch cartoons and play video games, and I have both of my parents to thank for it. So your comment is misplaced - I didn't broach how people vote or which candidate they choose, only the heavy handed rhetoric of a petulant minority.

I don't know why you think I'm a Rudy supporter. Actually, I'm not. What I am supporting is a willingness of Republicans to do whatever we can to stop the Democrats from destroying this country as Europe as has been. If that means someone who is not pro-life, so be it. If we lose the White House AND not regain the Congress, where are we then? Will "at least we can say we were pro-life" be a good enough reason for what would follow?

I see so many posts that say "I could never support "XYZ", he's not pro-life.". My God, we had both houses and a pro-life president for 8 years and Roe V. Wade is still law of the land. Pardon me, but where the hell were all these sanctimonious asses in Nov 06? Why weren't they screaming at the congressmen for years, to do something when they had the power to do it? I'm not flaming you personally. I just think our condition is critical and we need to make some hard decisions.

I realize that 8 years is not correct, Congress for 12 and 6 and counting for president. They did overlap for 6 but we still have Roe.

It is FAR more than just a pro-life issue. It is MULTIPLE liberal positions. Rudy Giuliani is worthless as a presidential candidate to conservatives.
