Movie Director Robert Clark, Best Known for 'A Christmas Story,' and Son Killed in Car Wreck

Wednesday, April 04, 2007

LOS ANGELES — Film director Robert Clark, best known for the beloved holiday classic "A Christmas Story," and his son were killed Wednesday in a head-on crash with an alleged drunken driver on Pacific Coast Highway, the filmmaker's assistant and police said.

Clark, 67, and son Ariel Hanrath-Clark, 22, were killed in the accident in Pacific Palisades, said Lyne Leavy, Clark's personal assistant .

The two men were in an Infiniti that collided head-on with a GMC Yukon around 2:30 a.m., said Lt. Paul Vernon, a police spokesman.

The driver of the other vehicle, Hector Velazquez-Nava, 24, of Los Angeles and his passenger, described as a 29-year-old woman, were taken to UCLA Medical Center with minor injuries.

The driver remained hospitalized and will be booked for investigation of "gross vehicular manslaughter" after being treated, Vernon said.

"The initial investigation has concluded that Nava was driving without a license northbound in the southbound lanes while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage," Vernon said.

Dang. Prayers for his family. I loved “A Christmas Story”. Reminded me of childhood. I grew up in Clearwater, Minnesota, and I remember coming home from school one bitter, cold winter with a sack full of all my school projects. My hands were full, and I rang the metal doorbell with my tongue. And of course, it got stuck. I panicked and yanked my head back, leaving a pink chunk of tongue. I think I was about 6. I always remember that when I watch that movie.......

Should we guess their status in the US?

Without a license and under the influence.

Are we looking at yet another case of a drunk illegal killing people on the roads?

Apparently yes, according to a story I just saw in the LA Times.

Yes. John and Ken are talking about this. We have plenty of drunk US citizens who drive drunk. But had this scumbag not been in the country, he would not have been able to kill these people.

If I’m guessing correctly - then it’s clearly Bush’s fault!

If it is Bush’s fault, then it is time for Hollywood to make a documentary exposing it.

Don't be silly, the guy was in an SUV. Clearly it was the SUV's fault.

Prayers for this wonderful director, his son and his family. I want to say more about the “status” of the person alleged to be responsible, but I will refrain from doing so here. Those of you who who know me know my opinion. Just damn.

A better link:

From the article, it's likely he was an illegal:

The driver of the other vehicle, Hector Velazquez-Nava, 24, of Los Angeles and his passenger, described as a 29-year-old woman, were taken to UCLA Medical Center with minor injuries.

The driver remained hospitalized and will be booked for investigation of "gross vehicular manslaughter" after being treated, Vernon said.

RIP

I’m not a big fan of Christmas Story but I love two of his earlier films, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, and Black Christmas, recently remade. Probably not very well judging from other remakes.
