Your little dog is adorable. I’m sorry you lost him. I lost my first Golden at 15 1/2 and we swore we wouldn’t have another.
We had all the excuses — too busy, never home, no time for a puppy, etc. We waited nearly 4 years and then we adopted a dog from a rescue organization. It was the smartest thing we ever did.
We have to admit that he is even a better dog than his predecessor. Probably not as smart, but he does not have some of her irritating habits either. He comes to work with us every day and has taken over the corner office. he has traveled coast to coast with us and is a perfect gentleman. He will be going to NY with us next week.
I bought new food for mine today too and new treats at a high end dog food store. I chose Fromm whitefish and potato formula, replacing Science Diet Sensitive Skin formula. The Science Diet was probably OK, but Fromm is made practically in my back yard. They’ve been making dog and mink and fox food since 1901 and have not been touched by this recall.
If anything goes wrong, I can walk out my back door, cut across a field and walk right into the Fromm owner’s front yard. If that food is bad, I just might carry a shotgun with me, I’d be that mad! (Please don’t take me seriously with that last remark.) My point is that I can reach out and touch the owner if there are any glitches in this food.
Fromm (also known as Federal Foods) makes a number of high performance dog foods. And they are mostly meat — duck, lamb, fish, poultry — and potato — no wheat or corn. I chose the whitefish formula because it had a lot of fish oil in it and I’m hoping it helps my dog’s itchy skin.
I am so sorry you lost your baby. I clicked on the link and saw he was a sweetie. Did he die as a result of the tainted food?
I had fed my two dogs and one cat some of the original recalled food. The cat wouldn’t eat it, and we’d have to throw it away (Special Kitty pouches). So far he is okay. And my dogs had eaten some Alpo cuts and gravy, and we got rid of it as soon as we saw the recall.
All of them seem to be okay as of now. As soon as I saw the recalls I started making my own dog food, and they love it. I’d have a hard time getting them to go back to commercial food, and it’s really not that difficult to make some for them. I add extra vitamens that I got from my vet to supplerment the food.
Sally, thanks very much for posting this information.
Same story but different source.
Sorry, but I did do a keyword search using the keywords I used when I posted this thread and nothing as current as the FDA emails came up. No harm done though as hopefully FReeper pet owners will see either your thread or my thread and get rid of any contaminated products.
I read over your thread and there was a lot of good info there. I did notice the FDA’s email alerts gave a more comprehensive list of which products, sizes, etc. were affected.
I’ve been checking ingredient lists for wheat gluten, whether or not the product has been recalled. Beneful has corn gluten, but no wheat gluten.
Thanks for that information! Now all I need to find out is whether Purina Cat Food has any wheat gluten or not. I've misplaced my reading glasses and can't quite make out the ingredient list on the cat food, the dog food or the generic bones and Milk Bones. With your info I can relax a little about the dogs since I'm not going to give them any of the dog biscuits. (Never mind about the cat food since I found the ingredient list online. Doesn't look as if the Purina Cat Chow contains wheat gluten, has wheat flour listed but while wheat flour will have glutens, wheat gluten isn't listed as a separate ingredient like the corn gluten meal is.)
My cat is about 3/4 of the way through a 7 lb. bag of the Purina Cat Chow and I haven't seen any type of changes in her.

But
How many old folks have dies from this contaminated pet food?
Thank you for this. My nearly deaf recently widowed mom has two wonderful dogs. The FDA needs to say which foods ARE OK. The list keeps getting longer.
