I am happy to hear of your family’s success with a very aweful disease. Arlen Specter looks like heck, but he is still here.

Thanks for posting. Isn't this refreshing?

"I am one of the lucky ones. There are many lucky ones today. And for all of our diversity, we share one thing in common—a deep appreciation for the fact that we live in the United States of America and have the best medicine and the best doctors the world has even known."

By the way, didn't Lurch have cancer too?

I saw that statement elsewhere. It does look as though Thompson just thought it best to go ahead and talk about this. That was a good move.

If I ~had to~ snark, I’d just say I wish he had mentioned Tony Snow in the statement. Not a mistake necessarily. But it would have been nice.

Having said all of that, let me just say that as a cancer survivor, cancer sux. Any kind.

Prayers for Fred and his family.

It isn’t. My husband had this in 1972. He had 3 months of treatment and he was in remission the rest of his life. He died last year of liver cancer.

Politically, revealing it without making an announcement about NOT running makes me believe he is running.

If he is going to run, he needs this information out in the public so people don’t think he’s hiding it. If he wasn’t going to run, he wouldn’t have to let people know.

If he wanted to use it as an excuse not to run, he would use it on the day he announced he was not running.

So it seems likely that, given that he isn’t announcing that he just learned it (he’s giving historical information), he is clearing the deck of the issue, to let it percolate through the news cycles and let people get settled about it before he’s a candidate.

It also gets him a news cycle, and a positive one at that, because almost nobody attacks a cancer survivor.

I hate to say this and I'm not a McCain fan, but alot of Freepers attacked John McCain because of his skin cancer. I am hoping now that kind of attack will stop.

Unfortunately, you’re right, it IS a clear negative in a Fred run, but I still plan to support him anywise. I hate to think that a remitted lymphoma which Fred himself doesn’t seem to be that worried about would disqualify him. I mean, look at how common cancers are these days. ANY one of the people running, in both parties, could find out tomorrow that they have terminal Hodgkins. It’s a trial of life that any one of us here on Free Republic could have to deal with. We could find out tomorrow. We could find out today, when we start bleeding from the nose or succumb to dizziness from the brain tumour that’s been growing in our heads unnoticed for the last three months. Life goes on. Fred, and we, can either be defeated by it, or we can defeat it. I would choose the latter.

Unfortunately, you're right. I may find a lot of reasons to attack Rudy or McCain, but the fact that they had cancer will NOT be one of them. Attack a man's policies. Attack his votes. Even attack his personal indiscretions, if they could bear upon the way he will manage his office. But leave his family, his health, his religion, and his race out of it.
