Capitol offense Spurrier: We don't need the Confederate flag

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The Confederate flag shouldn't fly at the Statehouse, South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier said Saturday after the Gamecocks' annual spring game.

Spurrier's comments came in response to questions about something he said Friday night when he received an award from a volunteer organization. According to people at that event, Spurrier said the flag should come down.

"My opinion is we don't need the Confederate flag at our Capitol," Spurrier said Saturday. "I don't really know anybody that wants it there, but I guess there are a lot of South Carolinians that do want it there."

He wasn’t very good at quarterback either. At least not in the NFL.

Lost in all this fuss is the fact that the Confederates were Democrats. Why should a Republican be questioned about the rebel flag? See http://grandoldpartisan.typepad.com/blog/2007/03/the_democratic_.html for more information.

"My opinion is we don't need the Confederate flag at our Capitol,"

Ok, he is entitled to an opinion.

"I don't really know anybody that wants it there,"

This is probably true. Spurrier associates with academics who are so far left Marx and Lenin are no doubt considered reactionaries.

" but I guess there are a lot of South Carolinians that do want it there."

Also true and a tribute to the good people of South Carolina .

Well, I was married to a cousin of Steve’s brother Graham’s wife, or maybe my ex was a cousin of Steve and Graham, whatever, I was almost a relative, but don’t really care what Steve thinks. Anyway, Cousin Diane was one fine looking woman, whooeee!
Leave the flag alone, y’all!

Who cares what some college football coach thinks about an issue as minor as the confederate flag? Also, I thought South Carolina settled this issue already years ago with a compromise.

The athletic and academic sides of a university coexist on the same campus, but generally don’t rub elbows much. I’d be surprised if Spurrier could recognized more than a handful of professors by sight.

I suppose a lot of people would think they don’t need a team named the “Gamecocks” either.

At least not in the NFL.

As a professional student athlete in college he was ok.

Hello world,

The chance of the flag coming down are slim and zero.

GET USED TO IT!

GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE!

Not all Confederates were Dems..,,as my my G-G grandaddy told me ,,be proud to be an American (though I was alittle young at the time),,I believe he was an Independant..,,I know my Grandaddy was an Independant,,He could care less about the Battle Flag (and he knew the reason for the Flag)..and he was as Southern as the ground I walk on...Just don’t spit on his family,,and that applies today as it did in the ‘50s’..

I don’t think we should be dogmatic on this point. I would not object to the Stars and Bars coming down for a while if they raise the Bonnie Blue Flag in it’s stead.
