Patricia Buckley, Den Mother of the Conservative Movement, R. I. P.

Sad News from the National Review Family [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

Patricia Aldyn Austin Taylor Buckley — Pat Buckley, as so many knew her, WFB's beloved — died last night at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut.

She died of septic poisoning following a vascular operation on her left leg.

Pat had been married to WFB since July 1950 and is mother of the acclaimed writer Christopher Buckley.

She's been a core part of the NR family — hosting editorial dinners in her home, among many other intrusions — since its conception and her loss will be felt by many.

Bill and Christopher are in so many of our prayers today. R.I.P, Mrs. Buckley.

Prayers up for the Buckley family. They have all done so much for the conservative movement, I can not imagine what our side of the aisle would have been like without them.

She died of septic poisoning following a vascular operation on her left leg.

Jeez. That surgery sounds routine.

Sorry to hear that. A spectacular helpmate to Bill I assume.

RIP Mrs. Buckley.

Surgery on someone who is 81 years old is never routine. The risks of complications is much greater.

The formal obituary speaks about a lengthy illness. This is part of the reason that WFB has retired from public appearances.

She should have gone to Norwalk Hospital or Westchester Medical. Much lower rates of post-operation infections.

Really. The incidence of infections, sometimes deadly, in American hospitals is rising and I would be interested if somone could explain why. It sounds like Mrs. Buckley died because she was in that hospital. I guess people just have to start insisting that the hospital staff wash their hands and done a mask when they enter your room.
