Sad News from the National Review Family [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
Patricia Aldyn Austin Taylor Buckley Pat Buckley, as so many knew her, WFB's beloved died last night at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut.
She died of septic poisoning following a vascular operation on her left leg.
Pat had been married to WFB since July 1950 and is mother of the acclaimed writer Christopher Buckley.
She's been a core part of the NR family hosting editorial dinners in her home, among many other intrusions since its conception and her loss will be felt by many.
Bill and Christopher are in so many of our prayers today. R.I.P, Mrs. Buckley.
Rest in peace Mrs. Buckley.
Sad news... RIP, Mrs. Buckley. Prayers for her family...
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my miscellaneous ping list.
The variety of nasty bugs that populate a hospital is much greater than you would find most anywhere else. I would almost rather lick a Bronx sidewalk than walk around barefoot in a hospital.
It sounds like Mrs. Buckley died because she was in that hospital.
Partly, but sepsis usually only sets in after a person's immune system is already greatly weakened. For an older woman like Mrs. Buckley the surgery just turned out to be too much.
I guess people just have to start insisting that the hospital staff wash their hands and don a mask when they enter your room.
Good hygene helps, but you carry bacteria with you everywhere you go.
Connecticut ping
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
My 108-year-old grandmother fell out of a hospital bed, broke her hip, and that ended a wonderful lady beloved by all. What made us angry was that it happened on a Friday and she had to wait all weekend in pain until the doctors came in on Monday morning to operate on her.
What has happened to the tradition of service and caring in the medical community?
Prayers and respects....
Sepsis = infection. They opened her leg, viruses or bacteria entered her system during surgery and it killed her. Assuming the brief report is correct. Other commenters suggest more complex causation.
(I'm not a doctor but I play one on FR.)
Prayers up for the Buckley family.
Well said. It is amazing what they have accomplished.

May the Lord Bless and Keep the Buckley family and loved ones in the palm of His hand. May Light Perpetual shine upon her now, and forever.
If you or anyone hears the funeral arrangements, please post the information. I’d like to attend.
