Climate Change Scenarios Scare, and Motivate, Kids
Washington Post ^ | April 16, 2007 | Darragh Johnson

...Alex Hendel of Arlington County is talking about the end of life on our beleaguered planet. Looking up to make sure his mother is following along, he taps the final stripe, which is so sparsely dotted it is almost invisible. "In 20 years," he pronounces, "there's no oxygen." Then, to dramatize the point, he collapses, "dead," to the floor.

For many children and young adults, global warming is the atomic bomb of today. .....

Parents say they're searching for "productive" outlets for their 8-year-olds' obsessions with dying polar bears. Teachers say enrollment in high school and college environmental studies classes is doubling year after year. And psychologists say they're seeing an increasing number of young patients preoccupied by a climactic Armageddon.

...."This message about global warming is so powerful," Bronstein says. "It gives me hope for the human race because people are responsive to it." He also encourages anxiety about the planet's future, comparing enviro-fears to "any suffering in your life: The first step is denial, and then there's a sense of doom, and then you have to get up and shake it off and change something."

Which is exactly what happened when 9-year-old Alyssa Luz-Ricca's mother returned from a business trip to Costa Rica with a T-shirt of a colorful frog and the words "Extinction is forever." Alyssa looked at the T-shirt and, she says, "I cried."

"She cried very hard," clarifies her mother, Karen Luz of Arlington.

"I don't like global warming," Alyssa continues, her eyes huge and serious behind her glasses, a stardust of freckles across her nose, "because it kills animals, and I like animals."....."I worry about it," says this girl who has yet to lose all her baby teeth, "because I don't want to die."

Oh, good grief!

These parents are spouting off about things of which they know very little. Even scientists are in disagreement; however, mommie and daddy saw a news crawl on CNN so they feel qualified to “open a dialogue” and scare the bejabbers out of their kids.

But this part really got to me:

“Which is exactly what happened when 9-year-old Alyssa Luz-Ricca’s mother returned from a business trip to Costa Rica with a T-shirt of a colorful frog and the words “Extinction is forever.” Alyssa looked at the T-shirt and, she says, “I cried.”
“She cried very hard,” clarifies her mother, Karen Luz of Arlington.”

If you child is that fragile that a t-shirt slogan will rock her world, DO NOT BRING SUCH A T-SHIRT HOME TO THAT CHILD. And if it rocks your world that your child “cried very hard,” maybe you need to take a good, hard look at how you are equipping that child to handle the real world.

Or maybe these doofuses just wanted to see their names in the Post, and played along with the bias...

Her own mother would encourage this so imagine what politicians will do.

They’re young, but they’re also green***.....The work the children are doing is important, said club sponsor Evan Bernstein, a staff development teacher at the school. Not only do the students learn about the environment, they also play a role in helping preserve it.

And the work is effective. Teachers don’t like it when they get orange slips, Bernstein said, and usually make a better effort to turn off lights and recycle paper and cans. Additionally, he said, many teachers have ordered desk lamps to use at the end of the day instead of their overhead lights, something they were able to do through the club.

Children outside the club also are becoming more conscious about the environment, Bernstein said. He recalled a day he left his classroom briefly without turning off the lights. When he came back, two children were standing outside the door, waiting to inform him he was wasting energy.....***

To save the world, you’ve got to start early ***....The 8-year-old third-grader at Piney Branch Elementary School hopes joining the Young Activists Club will help promote climate change and reverse the effects of global warming.

‘‘It all started when our school club paper came out, and my mom said this was my chance to change the world,” said DeMocker, a Takoma Park resident. ‘‘I always wanted to change the world. I decided if I did this, my dream would be coming true.”

DeMocker and a group of about nine students started small, researching kid-friendly Web sites for tips on ways to address global warming. They hosted a screening of former Vice President Al Gore’s ‘‘An Inconvenient Truth” at the school, and presented their findings on posters and in a presentation to their peers.

The youngsters collected student signatures over their lunch breaks for a petition asking for comprehensive anti-global warming legislation, which they hope to eventually send to Congress.

‘‘This is a very sharp group of kids,” said Piney Branch Elementary School Principal Bertram Generlette. ‘‘These are our activists of tomorrow. They’ve really educated our school community.”

The students spoke at the March 26 Takoma Park City Council meeting about what the city of could do and approached Mayor Kathy Porter for her support.

....The Young Activists Club began meeting less than two months ago with the help of parent organizer Rob Valente, who has a son in the group. The cause and the petition have spread to nearby Takoma Park Middle School, where many of the elementary school students have older brothers and sisters. Their next venture will be to approach their state delegates and U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen (D-Dist. 8) of Kensington for a meeting and their signatures.

‘‘They learned that they can talk to grown-ups about how they feel about these issues, and they don’t have to feel lost,” Valente said. ‘‘There’s a lot of information out there that can get overwhelming.

For 10-year-old fourth-grader Ben Miller, the most pressing issue is the melting of the polar ice caps. He’s been busy informing his friends and his family about the impact they can have now to prevent further climate change.

‘‘I joined because there’s a big problem for the Earth that’s a really big deal that’s not getting a lot of attention,” said Miller, a Takoma Park resident. ‘‘Pretty much for all my life that I can remember, this has been happening.”

Miller’s mother, PTA President Sue Katz-Miller, said there was something ‘‘very Takoma Park” in becoming so involved in activism and the political process....***

The enlistment and induction of children into this and other areas of adult life is just sickening, and done on the taxpayer dime.

Former Vice-President Al Gore, inventor of the internet, hopes to train 1,000 storytellers to spread the myth of man-made global warming.

Gore is on a one-pony carnival tour to promote his fanciful movie titled “An Inconvenient Truth.” The film is a hodgepodge of dramatic scenes of violent nature at work, concluding that ordinary people doing ordinary things are the quintessential evil force causing global warming and destroying the earth.

Gore complains that awareness of the “climate crisis” peaks and then is washed away as sane people turn to more important matters like buying cereal for the kids or cleaning the cat box.

Because normal people won’t stay permanently fooled by Gore’s chicken little warnings, he hopes to train a small army of fog peddlers to confound and indoctrinate small children, gullible college students and a stray dog or two.

The Gore hustlers will come armed with a slide show and heads filled with junk science to promote the global warming religion at Rotary Clubs and high schools.

"Teachers say enrollment in high school and college environmental studies classes is doubling year after year."

At a time when the country needs more engineers, chemists, mathematicians and scientists of all stripes, we are producing environmentalists.

IF people were serious about solving the supposed climate change problems or, more importantly, our dependence on imported oil and natural gas, they would be directing kids to scientific professions that actually have a chance to create solutions instead of a bunch of whiney idiots who try to make us feel guilty about our behavior and legislate changes. Please God help us all and especially the children.

It is awful to scare kids. This should be an enjoyable and carefree time in their lives. They will have enough worries as adults.

That reads very much like a spoof that was going around on the net a few years back. It was hilarious.

If right wing organizations did this they would call it child abuse.

I read about one the other day- an ex-teacher who travels around training the 1000 storytellers.

i>Hopefully reason will prevail and Gore will be "blowin' in the wind."

That anyone would believe the Profit Owlgore still amazes me. This man has scams on top of scams on top of scams. With the help of the hysteria created by a willing media, he has manufactured a condition I call "Goreguilt". Guilt and fear are great motivators and Gore thinks he's found a way to profit from it.

This is not funny. Its reminiscient of the the nuclear war fear that existed in the 1960’s with all those doomsday books and films.

The fear was based on fact. We came very close during the Cuban Missile Crisis to actually being involved in a nuclear exchange with the Soviets. Man-made global warming is more myth than fact and so is the idea that man can control climate change.

Front page above the fold in Sundays Seattle Times - What one household is doing to “Save the Planet”. This is the third Sunday paper in a roll with a Global warming story on the front page.

“Save the Planet” - like this was some sci-fi movie and the world is about to explode or something. I expect we see soon stories about global warming related suicides, because of the manufactured hysterics.

The drama was there in 1962, but they were cutting a deal behind the scenes. Our missiles out of Turkey, theirs out of Cuba.

For me in the late 60’s and 70’s it was a TV movie thing watching reruns of “On The Beach,” “Failsafe” and a whole lot of other films.

I read books and magazines, saw films in school about what to do in the event of nuclear attack.

I grew up in the 50s with "duck and cover" drills in school. The actual use of nuclear weapons in Japan, the development of the Hydrogen bomb, the Rosenbergs, the acquistion of nuclear weapons by the Soviet Union, and military strategists like Herman Kahn [Thinking the Unthinkable] all played into these fears.

The drama was there in 1962, but they were cutting a deal behind the scenes. Our missiles out of Turkey, theirs out of Cuba.

It was more than drama as we have subsequently learned from members of the JFK administration. Some of them actually sent their families out of the DC metro area fearing for their safety. We were playing a dangerous game of chicken with the Soviets. It was far more dangerous than the general public realized at the time.

For me in the late 60’s and 70’s it was a TV movie thing watching reruns of “On The Beach,” “Failsafe” and a whole lot of other films.

Add Dr. Strangelove to that list. A true classic.

I read books and magazines, saw films in school about what to do in the event of nuclear attack.

I joined the military in 1965. We trained and had drills on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. The possibility of a nuclear war was not a MSM creation. It was very, very real.
