His father, Michael Karson, told the Camera newspaper that the comments may have been misinterpreted and questioned whether his son's free speech rights had been violated.
"I would have hoped that state officials would know their First Amendment better than they seem to," he said.

Max's problems look like they come from poor parenting. It's hard to parent well when you're extremely stupid.

Several witnesses told investigators the student said he was "angry about all kinds of things from the fluorescent light bulbs to the unpainted walls, and it made him angry enough to kill people." Sounds psycho to me too. Glad they took him in for questioning.

"I would have hoped that state officials would know their First Amendment better than they seem to," he said. Why would he think that? The University had no clue on Second Amendment Rights.
As for this idiotic kid, kick his butt... but jail seems a bit over the top. Unless they can prove he was making "terroristic threats"....

I’m not sure what the parents did wrong. While he can’t overtly threaten others, Max and anyone else is entitled to make comments sympathetic to a mass murderer without the government arresting him. It’s a free country.

In 1999 it was kids who drew pictures of guns. Now they are going to round up and send to therapy all the goofy loner college students. Just wait. This is the first of many such stories we’ll see in the coming weeks.

When you tell me you're angry enough about something to kill me, you better make sure that I know it's hyperbole.
Otherwise you may end up arrested, or worse.

Max Karson did the functional equivalent of:
1. Flying a plane in Japanese markings over Pearl Harbor at noon on December 7th 1941.
2. Wearing an SS uniform in Israel on Holocaust Memorial Day.
3. Carrying a box cutter into an airport in mid-September 2000.
The first amendment is subject to Time, Place, and Manner restrictions. Though instead of calling the police it would have been better to beat the living daylights out of the arrogant little $%&^#$**#^%$&&_)&$!$#@%#v !!!

The student, identified by police as Max Karson of Denver, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of interfering with staff, faculty or students of an education institution. It seems to me that anyone that says something a University doesn't like could be arrested under this statute. The 1st amendment took a hit on this one.

His comments were in very poor taste, that’s for sure. I can see someone with a dark sense of humor going, “eh, yeah...sometimes I want to go on a rampage too.”
I think I would need to be there to comment on either way if the police should get involved

Instead of worrying about this kids First Amendment rights the father should be getting the kid some psychiatric help.
He might even talk to the doc himself.

The kid sounds like an idiot to me but if that were illegal we'd have arrested Pelosi, Reed and Webb long ago!
The last time I checked we didn't put people in jail in this country becasue we don't like what they say.
