Thompson tests conservative waters
The Washington Times ^ | April 19, 2007 | Ralph Z. Hallow and Stephen Dinan

Posted on 04/19/2007 4:13:30 AM PDT by Josh Painter

Evidence of former Sen. Fred Thompson's presidential appeal to victory-seeking conservatives is growing, including drawing more than 50 House Republicans yesterday to hear his pitch and walking out with some endorsements for the Tennessean.

"When Fred Thompson runs for president, I will endorse him," said Rep. Jeff Miller of Florida.

Rep. Dan Burton of Indiana said Mr. Thompson "is ready, and I want him to run."

Richard Land, one of the nation's leading Southern Baptists, told The Washington Times yesterday that Mr. Thompson is sure to win if he runs.

The actor-politician has invited Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder to attend any announcement of a presidential candidacy.

"If Fred Thompson enters the race, he will be the odds-on favorite to become the nominee," said Mr. Land, president of the South Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. "He will be a formidable candidate in the general election for the presidency."

Mr. Kinder, a staunch supporter of the Iraq war, noted that "Thompson won both his U.S. Senate races by more than 20 percentage points in a state that Bill Clinton carried twice."

"Fred Thompson has demonstrated massive crossover appeal [to Democrats and independents] reminiscent of Reagan," Mr. Kinder said.

Mr. Land and Mr. Kinder's enthusiasm adds to the conviction among Republican insiders that Mr. Thompson will enter the contest and become a magnet for Iraq war advocates and social conservatives looking for a candidate they can trust...

Mr. Land said Mr. Thompson's wife, Jeri Kehn, telephoned to thank him for a complimentary newspaper column. On Saturday, Mr. Thompson phoned to say he wanted Mr. Land present at any campaign kickoff.

"No date or time frame was mentioned," Mr. Land said.

Thompson isn't sure to win if he runs--to be technical about it.

He should get moving if he wants to be the next President.

Its amazing how much support Thompson apparently has without actually announcing he’s running.

Tells me the GOP ‘base’ isn’t buying any of the available versions of Rudy McRomney.

From the article:

"Fred Thompson has demonstrated massive crossover appeal [to Democrats and independents] reminiscent of Reagan," Mr. Kinder said.

It would be nice if this were true, but is it? I don't recall hearing millions of Democrats saying "I'm going to vote for Fred!"

“Mr. Land gave a qualified “yes” when asked whether conservative evangelical voters will sit out the 2008 election if none of the candidates shares their values. He said they may participate in elections below the presidential level, but “you will see a significant drop in the turnout among evangelicals.”

There it is Rooty, in black and white. You have zero chance of winning without the south. Drop out now and go back to NY and play dress-up.

Here is a guy that most of the Rudy supporters say they could live with, but who also gets praise from Southern Baptist Leader Land.

He doesn’t upset the fiscal conservatives, the social conservatives seem ready to cling to any piece of wood still floating given the current crop of leading candidates, the libertarians don’t see him poorly, the law-and-order crowd is on board, and even the country-club republicans seem to like his good-old-boy charm.

It will be interesting to see how he fairs once he isn’t “none of the above”, but early signs are this is a guy all the groups could support.

I really thought Mitt Romney would be that compromise candidate, and maybe he still will be, but he has some significant drag due to his being a “Massachusetts politician”. Although I would think that Rudy beating him in Mass. should show who the real “Mass. Liberal” is in the republican party.

Fred’s got 2 immediate problems.

1) He will need the $$$$$, no matter what you Fred-goggle wearers think.....so he better start massive fundraising for the finite GOP cash right now. Early Fred supporters only do him a disservice in thinking that Fred will be the only candidate that won’t need the $$$$ or that people are just waiting around to send him $100 mill IF he decides to jump in. Whether you know it or not, most people in the country have no clue who he is...don’t even know he was a Senator....and his being a 7th billing actor won’t give him the name recognition needed to inform the ignorant masses as to who he is and what he stands for.

2) He’s not yet (last info I had) confirmed for the first debate in 2 weeks. No matter the excuses that will fly if he doesn’t attend this first one, it doesn’t give the perception that he wants the job.

...and perceptioon is EVERYthing.

Question: Has a President ever been drafted for the job?
