Remains of two diggers found in Vietnam

20th April 2007, 9:45 WST

A group of Australian Vietnam veterans are 99 per cent certain remains they have uncovered in southern Vietnam belong to two diggers missing in action for more than 40 years.

Lance Corporal Richard Parker and Private Peter Gillson were killed during battle in the Dong Nai province east of Saigon in 1965, but their bodies were never recovered.

The group of veterans, known as Operation Aussies Home, have been searching in Vietnam for the two soldiers and another four still missing in other parts of the country.

Group leader Retired Infantry Lieutenant Colonel Jim Bourke and Veterans Affairs Minister Bruce Billson are both optimistic the remains will be identified as the missing pair.

Lt Col Bourke said the group had researched their likely resting place then used ground-penetrating radar to eliminate much of the half-acre cassava field they were examining.

On Monday the group discovered the sole of a boot and began excavating the surrounding area.

"(On Wednesday) we had a major breakthrough," Mr Bourke told ABC Radio.

"The guys recovered a map that was the same map as we used on that operation in 1965.

"It was quite a moving scene, actually.

"The men were working in extreme temperatures, and as they were excavating they were talking to their friends, and telling them they were going home."

Lt Col Bourke said he had called the men's families to break the news.

"I didn't want to do it until I was 99.5 per cent certain that we had the remains of the two men, and I've got that degree of certainty now, based on the recovery of the map," he said.

"Obviously identification of the remains will be subject to a formal forensic process. But as I say I'm 99 per cent certain that we're on the money."

Mr Billson said if the remains did prove to be Australian they would be treated with dignity.

"We've got some optimism but we need to be careful that there's firm (proof of their identity)," he told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

"I've got some optimism, if they are who we think they may be, we'll arrange for their repatriation back to Australia and proper burial in consultation with their families."

Forensic specialists were preparing to leave for Vietnam within days to help in the identification process, Mr Billson said.

The excavation also has uncovered bone fragments, teeth and a button used on Australian Army clothing of the 1960s.

ARMY SUPPORT TO OPERATION AUSSIES HOME

The Australian Government has approved a grant of $37,500 for Operation Aussies Home to search for likely burial sites of two Australian soldiers killed in action during the Vietnam War, the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence Bruce Billson, said today.

"The soldiers, Lance Corporal Richard Parker and Private Peter Gillson, were killed during fighting between A Company from the 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) and Vietcong forces in Bien Hoa province in 1965. At the time of the battle, the heavy weight of enemy fire meant that their bodies could not be recovered," Mr Billson said.

"Operation Aussies Home, established by Vietnam veteran Mr Jim Bourke, is a dedicated group of Australians active in finding the bodies of six Australians, four Army and two RAAF, who are listed as missing in action during the Vietnam War.

"In 2005, the group visited the site of the 1965 battle in Vietnam, along with two Australian veterans and one Vietnamese veteran of the battle to try and pinpoint the likely burial sites of the two 1RAR soldiers," Mr Billson said.

"Operation Aussies Home have now exhausted all avenues of possible research, including information held by the Army History Unit, the testimony of platoon members and interviews with Vietcong soldiers, to identify the area where the bodies are likely to be buried.

"Jim Bourke and his team have done an excellent job and they are now finalising plans to return to the site. This grant will help them apply insights gained from research to use advanced technology to locate physical evidence and remains.

"In addition to the grant, the Australian Government, through our embassy officials in Vietnam, will continue to assist Mr Bourke with in-country search approval from Vietnamese authorities, and in the facilitation of discussions with former Vietcong soldiers," Mr Billson said.

Mr Bourke welcomed the funding from the Australian Government and also embassy support to assist in discussions with relevant Vietnamese Government authorities.

"These funds should go a long way towards achieving our goal of fully accounting for Parker and Gillson," Mr Bourke said.

"The Australian Government, through Defence, is committed to honouring the memory of our war dead and helping to recover the remains of our brave soldiers to ensure they are laid to rest in accordance with family wishes, with the proper burial they deserve," Mr Billson said.

One of the few countries to stand with us in Vietnam, just as they’re one of the few to stand with us in Iraq. Here’s hoping these men receive an honorable welcome home from our cousins across the Pacific.

“” just as they’re one of the few to stand with us in Iraq. “”

LOL, they have just a token force in Iraq. Hardly pushing the boat out and getting themselves in the crapper. They have commited absolutely MINIMAL forces....just as much to show they are doing ‘something’ but not enough to actually make any difference either way. They might as well not be there.

Just how many forces has America committed to Australian-led operations in the Solomon Islands and East Timor?

The global war on terror is about more than just Afghanistan and Iraq. Australia is taking the lead in the theatres closer to home - if America wants to take some responsibility in those theatres, then Australia would have more troops available to operate in the media-aware theatres.

I'm not saying for a moment, America should commit troops in either Timor or the Solomons. It would be foolish to divert troops from one theatre to another just to make a point - but there seem to be Americans who seem to think Australia should do just that.

Australia's Defence Force has been operating at full tempo since 1999. And when America has provided us with some assistance in local operations - like a couple of C-17s for a few days - we haven't gone around suggesting that was just a 'token force'. Maybe it's because we understand how these things actually work.

WT...?

It’s not like they have a large military as it is, and their government has shown a lot more backbone despite enormous popular opposition to the war over there. And as others have mentioned, it’s not like we’re helping them out in East Timor.

Show some gratitude.

I'm alive today because of an Aussie field hospital in the middle of nowhere in Viet Nam.

Even if they had only 1 supporting us he would be worth more than 100 with your attitude.
