Fifth generation fighter tests in Russia to commence in 2009
Moscow, April 20: Russia expects to begin test flights of the fifth generation fighter plane in 2009, while talks are underway for Indian involvement in the project codenamed "prospective frontline aircraft".
"The first flight has been tentatively set for 2009," head of the United Aircraft Corporation Alexei Fyodorov told Russian media.
During President Vladimir Putin's India visit in January last, New Delhi and Moscow had reached a political decision to jointly develop the fifth generation fighter on the basis of a project prepared by Sukhoi Design Bureau.
The two sides are currently negotiating on the financial aspects of the agreement as Moscow has proposed to invest part of the rupee debt New Delhi owes to Russia.
The fifth generation fighter will be equipped with new engines capable of imparting thrust for accelerating its speed in seconds from zero to Mach-2 (twice the speed of sound), radio Mayak reported.
According to it, smart ammunition and beyond visual range missiles capable of "hitting a nail" are being developed for arming the new fighter, which would also have stealth features based on Russian "cold plasma" technology capable of absorbing radar signals.

The Russian defense industry hasn't had an original idea since Kalishnikov designed the AK.

round engines = larger rcs. More russian ripped off designs. Pathetic nation.
“The Russian defense industry hasn’t had an original idea since Kalishnikov designed the AK.”
I agree, That I believe is very true. Everything else they have they’ve stolen.
There’s a lot of F-22 similarities in that picture. Similar double delta wing, but the horizontal stabilizers are different, the engines are farther apart, more like their Su-27 series, and have round nozzles, it looks like it might have above the wing intakes like their MiG-29, the trailing edge of the wings is also different than the F-22 and the canted tails are much smaller and are placed farther back with less canted angle...I’d like to see some other views. I wonder when actual photos will leak out for the world to see.
I know we here in the US have some of the world’s best weapon systems. We take this for granted, and are rightly proud of our top of the line fighters, bombers, air craft carriers, tanks, anti-missile systems and our dedicated and well trained and equipped soldiers, airmen and sailors.
But this constant sneering disregard of Russian technology won’t serve us well. They are capable, smart people.
I know they ripped off the B-29, spied to learn atomic secrets, etc.
Of course, our stealth technology was developed by a Russian. They have the super-sonic Sunburn missiles and the hypercavitating supersonic Squall torpedo.
And their bravery has been demonstrated many times. Whether we consider them allies as in WWII or enemies as in the cold war, it is for our own good that we respect them, for they are fully capable of inflicting enormous harm. If we were ever in head-to-head combat, which I pray will never happen (after all, many of our interests coincide), we must not under-estimate them.
Other than that, everything is fine.
"I agree, That I believe is very true. Everything else they have theyve stolen."Lighten up. The Mi-24 Hind was a pretty original idea, so were the Tu-22 Blinder, Tu-22M Backfire, as well as many other. Most of their SAM designs have no direct Western counterpart either, ecxept for MANPADs, which were apparently influenced by FIM-42 Redeye (the original SA-7 Strela) and FIM-92 Stinger (SA-16/18 variants). Some reports claim that in Afghanistan the GRU managed to obtain a 1-st generation Stinger in the 80s. The designs which were clearly copied had problems from the get go. The Tu-4 (a ripoff from the B-29) was somewhat unaffectionately referred to by its users and maintainers as "the brick bomber". The Tu-144 (a Concorde ripoff) had structural problems. There does, however, exist a culture of trying to copy the best (and the worst!) of Western hardware within the former Soviet defense complex. This culture was always being "flowed down", and designers often had to stiffle their own original creative thought in order to meet the requirement to reverse engineer this or that system. Tupolev himself had to swallow his pride when he was forced to abandon his own original work and direct the reverse-engineering of B-29 Stratofortress.
+1
Personally, I don’t disregard Russian designers. Sputnik woke us up to the space race. The MiG-29 is uniquely Russian. The Sukhoi 27 series is disregarded as an F-15 copy, but that’s not the case. Certainly they are influenced by successful Western designs, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t creatively original. I agree. We must never underestimate them.
You mean that you don't think they designed the Buran from scratch? You know it's a coinkydink that it looks so much like our Space Shuttle..... /sarcasmoff
Yep, both Iraq conflicts proved that!!??
Ruski weapons always seemed better suited to fighting and suppressing civilians.
Mattel sells these for $12.99 each.
Bingoski!
Amazingski, how much they copinski a proven productski...
Da Comrade?
Was Russian space program "stolen" too? Do you mean German engineers working in Russia after WWII ? :)
LOL, I was wondering how many posts before the artist’s rendering was given that name.
