Cheney: Threat of nuclear attack in U.S. city 'very real'
Chicago Tribune ^ | April 16, 2007 | By Mark Silva

WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney, often called upon to deliver the administration's toughest talk about the wars abroad, now says this about the threat of terrorists detonating a nuclear bomb in an American city: "It's a very real threat. ... Something that we have to worry about and defeat every single day."

Cheney's warning about what's at stake for the U.S. in withdrawing from Iraq, delivered in a TV interview Sunday and coupled with a speech in Chicago on Friday and a war statement that President Bush plans to make Monday, is part of an escalating chorus of pressure that the White House hopes to exert on Democrats to approve a new war-spending bill...

I don't know if this has been posted before. If it has I apologize for the redundancy, but I thought it was important enough to post since the revelation over the past several days of the threats coming from Al Qaeda of an American Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and all the chatter of a pending nuclear attack against Iran.

The question is, how many of us are prepared for a large scale national disaster that would cripple food supplies, the power grid, emergency health services, transportation and the like.

..."It's a very real threat. ... Something that we have to worry about and defeat every single day." ...

Then tell your boss to close the borders, Dick.

Nobody believed they could pull off 911 untill they did. We wont fully commit to the war until after we lose an entire city.

Well, if a bomb is smuggled across the border, it will be a terrible indictment on administrations that did nothing to enforce our borders.

If it was as real as portrayed, closing the borders, tightening up the ports, and securing loose fissionable material would be at the top of our priority list. Anyone think they are?

It could be several cities.

A bomb wouldn’t have to be smuggled across the borders. A speedboat could slip into the harbor of one or several of the coastal cities with a tactical nuke and set it off in the harbor much easier than smuggling one across the border.

Do you really think that these administrations will care? They can’t be held responsible or sued for any malmanagement of our national security.

This will be of little solace if and when the unthinkable happens, but I am glad Cheney is on record as having said this. Under Clinton we had an 8 year vacation from history and we had general euphoria in the MSM during Clinton's reign. That all came to a close when Bush was elected and then changed again after 9/11.

After 9/11 the MSM went searching for blame and sought to pin ever thing on Bush for being unprepared although he had only been in office for a few months following Clinton's 8 long years. Everyone in Congress wanted answers as to how our agencies failed to warn us. The MSM pushed aside Jamie Gorelick's wall aside and continued to blame Bush.

Skip forward 5 years. Democrats are demanding a withdrawal from Iraq. The Democratic leader has declared the Iraq war lost - while us combat troops are still fighting.

Make no mistake, should a nuke go off in Manhattan liberals will have no one to blame but themselves!

Somebody should re-instate Red Cell for its original purposes, AND get Dick Marcinko to head it.

Oh boy . . . are they ramping up the justification for opening up another front in the GWOT?

They would need a fusion bomb or a bunch of baby nukes to pull that off.

I don’t mean to be alarmist, but I believe there is little anyone can do to prevent someone with money from buying a nuke and motoring (or sailing) it into a harbor in any coastal city in the world. I do not believe that more interations of the Patriot Act or more numerous and strict inspections of containers or more invasions of other countries would lessen the chances of this happening by any worthwhile degree. In this respect, I believe more money and power to Homeland Security would not help.
Frankly, I don’t know what would help other than being a country that people did not want to target. I don’t think this is possible, either, at least in the near term, and I don’t know what that would look like, anyway. I sure as hell don’t want the US to turn into a country no one gives a crap about, like Equador or something.

Ok, so just give up and don't do a thing but sit by and wait for the inevitable.

The Islamofacists have been working towards establishing a Muslim califate since the 1920s after the fall of the Ottoman califate, and will use any means neccessary to that end.

But since you think there is nothing we can do to stop it, I guess you may as well start studying the Koran and learn to speak Arabic to make for a warm welcome for them when they get here.
