The Real Jimmy Carter
FrontPageMagazine.com ^ | April 27, '07 | Alan M. Dershowitz

Posted on 04/29/2007 3:44:51 PM PDT by T.L.Sink

I have known Jimmy Carter for years. In 1976... he sent me a handwritten note asking me for my help in his campaign. A former student brought Carter to Harvard to meet with some faculty members, me among them. I immediately liked Jimmy Carter and saw him as a man of integrity. I...worked hard for his election. Recent disclosures of Carter's extensive financial connections to Arab money, particularly from Saudi Arabia, had shaken my belief in his integrity. When told that he received a monetary reward in the name of Sultan Al Nahayan, and kept the money, even after Harvard returned it I simply didn't believe it. How could a man of such apparent integrity enrich himself with dirty money... I know because I was involved, in a small way, to persuade Harvard University to return more than $2 million that the financially strapped Divinity School received. Initially, I reluctant to put pressure on Harvard to turn back money for the Divinity School, but then a student at the Divinity School showed me the facts. They were staggering. The extent of Carter's support from, and even dependence on, dirty money is still not known. What we do know is deeply troubling. Carter also received a million dollar pledge from the Saudi-based bin Laden family and despite the Saudi Arabian government's myriad human rights abuses, the Carter Center's Human Rights progam has NO activity whatever in Saudi Arabia. ... when reviewing the Center's human rights activities in other countries: essentially no human rights activities in China or North Korea, or in Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria, BUT activity regarding Israel and its alleged abuses... I now believe that there is no person in American public life today who has a lower ratio of real to apparent integrity than Jimmy Carter.

One can only wonder if in 1979 when Iran held Americans hostage for over a year, the humiliating situation was prolonged because of Carter's incompetence or because he was on the take. Perhaps both.

Dershowitz is a bit slow on the uptake if he is only now finding out that Carter lacks integrity.

It's just his ox that got gored this time.

All that time I simply thought he was a boob. He was in the tank for the bin Ladens.

Jimmy Carter helped make it a thing of shame to wear the uniform of this country.

Treasonous bass-turd.

You said — “One can only wonder if in 1979 when Iran held Americans hostage for over a year, the humiliating situation was prolonged because of Carter’s incompetence or because he was on the take. Perhaps both.”

With Saudi money, they’re usually “on the take” after they get out of office. Apparently, it’s the “money trough” for many politicians. The Saudis are buying their way around with the money we pay for what we put in the tanks...

Here’s what gets me about this story: we Republicans scream and rant and carry on when a Democrat runs for president; we point out at great length how unethical they are. Kennedy, LBJ, Carter, Clinton—we warned everyone that they were not the angels of justice and compassion they seemed. Yet the American populace still does not pay attention to us, through all these examples.

And it’s happening again. We scream and rave and have convulsions and warn America that Hillary is a dangerous socialist, that Obama is a far-left-wing kook. But will the American electorate listen? Unlikely.

Yeah... Alan's just a bit slow! He's known and supported Carter for almost 40 years -- and only in the last year(!) does he come to realize how shallow, biased, disingenuous, and intellectually dishonest he is/was and always will be. Hey, Alan: imagine if we had elected this bum for another 4 years during the depths of despair in 1980! Imagine our economy after 4 more years of Jimmah! Imagine the state of the Cold War with another 4 years of malaise and retreat! Imagine the millions of now freed former citizens of Iron Curtain countries being back in those communist ghettos. It's nice to know how bright the profs at Harvard are. And it's nice to know the level of intelligence of the intelligentsia who supported Algore, John Kerry, and others of their ilk in recent elections. Alan, you really should be ashamed of yourself.

He was on the take, T. L., and he sold out the Shaw and created the Axis of Evil Iran because he didn't get a 10% bribe on the Brown & Root port project contracted by the Shaw.

The bribing of Carter is the tip of the iceberg. I believe that many politicians, journalists, editors, environmental groups, and academics are on OPEC or Arab payrolls. Bribing foreigners is a way of life in the Middle East. We need a FEDERAL investigation of the role of such bribes. Essentially, a bribe to a leader in the Sierra Club who then opposes all domestic drilling is TREASON and should be prosecuted as such.

I remember Carter's prounoucement during his presidential run. After he said you can trust me, I thought he was a phony. I turned out to be correct.

As for Arab money causing his anti-Semitism, I think it's a cast of which came first, the chicken or the egg. Carter is a big admirer of the vicious anti-Semite and populist, Tom Watson. I think his admiration for Tom Watson fuels Carter's anti-Semitism.

"That is now Jimmy Carter's sad legacy."

And there was never a chance of the country having a positive memory of Carter. The man was a buffoon in 1976 and he will be a buffoon long after his death. Although, I think his presidency in no way reflects on the soldiers who tried to serve under him. It takes a certain strength of character to continue at a difficult job when it is obvious that the man in charge is a fool.

I now believe that there is no person in American public life today who has a lower ratio of real to apparent integrity than Jimmy Carter. The public perception of his integrity is extraordinarily high. His real integrity, it now turns out, is extraordinarily low. He is no better than so many former American politicians who, after leaving public life, sell themselves to the highest bidder and become lobbyists for despicable causes. That is now Jimmy Carter's sad legacy.

How the mighty have fallen.

BTW, the link to the Zayed Centre is not working.

We know that Carter was a failure and incompetent as President but I think we forget that despite that knowledge many considered him a person of personal integrity. I admit that in that regard I was one of the duped. I thought that he was a political disgrace but believed the image he projected as a person of deep religious faith and good will.

Now we know he’s a corrupt, unprincipled anti-Semite who never met a tyrant he didn’t like. I think Dershowitz isn’t defending Israel because he’s Jewish. Rather, I think his point is that Carter shows his arrant hypocrisy and corruption because he takes Arab money to denounce Israel - a U.S. ally, a democracy, and an island of Judeo-Christian Western civilization in a sea of Islamofascist failed sates.
Let’s not forget that Carter has made a career out of “human rights” and yet he’s sold out to the highest foreign state bidders whose own regimes are the most savage violators of human rights. It’s great when you can be bribed to express bigoted and unprincipled views that you already hold!

I remember Carter telling the crowd at Madison Square Garden when he received the Demo nomination “I’ll never lie to ya! I guaranteeeeee it!” And from that moment on, I knew he was a lying slime.

I also remember seeing (for the first time thanks to what can only be one of the first mainstream media coverups) his brother Billy on election night 1976 and thinking “why didn’t we know about this degenerate earlier?” By the way, people forget that brother Billy was on General Moamar Quadaffi’s payroll back during the Carter administration — representing Libyan oil interests and such. It seems that Jimmy learned something from brother Billy.

"Carter has made a career out of “human rights” and yet he’s sold out to the highest foreign state bidders.."

Believing now that Carter is motivated by payoffs will be as misguided as having previously believed that he was motivated by humanitarian idealism.

If corruption fueled Jimmy Carter, how do you explain his support for the penniless Anti-American tyrants of Sandinista Nicaragua, Castro's Cuba, Kim Jong-il's Korea... ? And why was he never corrupted by pro-American tyrants like the Shah of Iran, Duvalier's Haiti, Somoza's Nicaragua...?

Money from anti-American & anti-Israeli Middle East tyrants can only be seen as icing on the cake of a position that primarily undermines America's most important ally in that area - Israel. What better way is there to betray American interest?

No, Carter's support is not for sale to any buyer. It is given only to those who are undermining American Interests - and money is optional.
