Miss America won't testify in sex predator sting

Here she won't be -- Miss America.

The case against at least one -- and probably more -- of the 11 men arrested in Suffolk with the help of the beauty queen and the television show "America's Most Wanted" is in jeopardy because representatives for Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson have told prosecutors she won't return to Long Island to testify, said Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota.

Without Nelson available as a star witness, every case she actively participated in during the undercover police sex sting may be up in the air, said Spota. He called the police operation well-intended but "nothing more than a publicity stunt."

"Given the fact that we have now determined that Miss America was actually speaking to one of those arrested, I have instructed prosecutors not to present any more cases to the grand jury until we can determine her involvement," said Spota, who added that police didn't tell his office about the April 20 operation until the afternoon before it went down.

[snip] Officials with the Miss America Organization did not return several calls for comment Monday. Spota said his office was trying to contact Nelson Monday, but was unable to do so. "Her agents have told us that she's not coming back to testify," Spota said.

Several attorneys representing the 11 men arrested in the sting said they don't intend to give Nelson a choice. They said they plan to subpoena Nelson, and if she failed to appear at any court date, she could be held in contempt and face criminal charges herself.

"You've now made Miss America a witness," said attorney Michael Brown, of Central Islip, who represents Ronald Stahl, 43, of Holbrook -- one of the 11 men nabbed in the sting........."

Looks like she better make the schedule changes necessary to appear at the trial.

Maybe maybe not.

She can just leave the state before being served with a subpoena.

She looked pretty hot in her “teenage” outfit. Those perps must have thought they hit gold.

This whole Miss America/AMW showboating served no purpose except ratings. There was simply no reason to bring her and her celebrity into it......non-famous/anonymous bait trolled on the internet works just as well, as a multitude of news reports show on a nationwide basis.

Maybe it is just the prosecutor with his butt in the air but, if a criminal trial needs Miss America as a witness I would think the pagent officials would also demand she appear. It will be a black eye to the Miss America title if she doesn’t appear.

So much for "using my title to bring world peace and justice."

This bimbo parade needs to disappear into the ash heap of history, and a refusal to do even the simplest things to stop the most hated crime will just grease the skids under its descent into irrelevancy.

Kinda sounds like she and John Walsh were more interested in the publicity angle.

This stinks. If the guys are guilty, why isn’t she helping out? The article doesn’t contain all the relevant information, I’m sure.

Ridiculous - there should be no reason why she would have to be there if they have everything on videotape. I think the prosecutor is the one seeking the publicity.

How long do you think she will hold onto her crown if Miss America can't return to the State of New York without being tossed in jail?

Being wanted in New York is also likely going to kill a chance at a modeling career.

You’re not wanted (as a criminal) until you skip out on a SERVED subpoena.

And, no, I didn’t say it wasn’t a stupid move on her part — just not criminal.

All she has to do is avoid service of the subpoena in-state.

Where is the liberal outrage that child molesters may go free?

Oh yeah, liberals are child molesters, or at least want the option open.

I just looked at her pictures.

She’s just another fairly cute Oklahoma bottle blond. Her modeling carreer will go nowhere, anyway.

“... there should be no reason why she would have to be there if they have everything on videotape.”

Uh maybe because a defendant has the RIGHT to confront his accusers.

Basic constitutional right.

who ever thought of this stupid idea to begin with? obviously the Miss America officials went through with the initial concept and these morons ought to allow her to go through with the trial or they will definitely have a black eye because all of these perverts will be off the hook when their case is dropped.

From http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,268229,00.html:

Nelson, whose platform issue is Internet safety for children, said she was eager to participate.

Yup -- and then never set foot in NY again. Not too good for a modeling career, ya know?

Actually, she could set foot -— she’d just be subject to a subpoena -— which would expire after the trial.

But, as noted up thread -— she’s not model quality. Pretty in a common corn-fed way? Yeah. Great Junior League president material and/or doctor’s trophy wife. But hardly Vogue material.
