Mitt’s new flip-flop is out of this world
The Boston Herald ^ | 05/02/2007 | Jessica Heslam

Already under scrutiny for shifting positions on key issues and his Mormon faith, presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has made a bizarre new flip flop - saying on national TV his favorite novel is Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s “Battlefield Earth.”

The former Massachusetts governor told Fox News his favorite book was the Bible but his favorite novel was the science fiction tome “Battlefield Earth.”

“Actually, the one by L. Ron Hubbard,” Romney said when asked to name his favorite novel. “I’m not in favor of his religion by any means, but he wrote a book called ‘Battlefield Earth’ that was a very fun science fiction book.”

The Mark Twain novel “Huckleberry Finn” tops the book list on Romney’s My Space page. “Battlefield Earth” isn’t on the list.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said: “Battlefield Earth is pretty good science fiction. It’s about Earth being ruled by an alien race, sort of the way the Democrats are running Congress.”

But Stephen Prothero, head of Boston University’s religion department and the author of “Religious Literacy,” noted Romney’s Mormonism could be a stumbling block with some voters.

“Mormonism sounds like a science fiction fantasy to some Americans,” Prothero said.

?? This is not a flip-flop, and what’s so bad about liking a Hubbard SF novel? Plus a gratuitous swipe at Romney’s faith, which may have been the reason for the article.

Why does Romney still have a MySpace? He gave up his Facebook because of CFR or something.

We’re going to hold his choice of books against him now? Wow! Next up: denouncing him for saying he likes scrambled eggs for breakfast when he recently said he likes blueberry muffins.

I wonder how many lawsuits have been filed against him already?

I think Rush decided to start calling Algore, Al Ron Gore in honor of his new fake religion and the first thing I wonder is: How many lawsuits will be filed?

Lawsuits must be a sacrament in that “religion.”

If Romney gets an endorsement from Tom Cruise or John Travolta, he’s history!

I enjoyed the movie.

John Travolta was an alien bad guy.

“If Romney gets an endorsement from Tom Cruise or John Travolta” - would that mean that he would have both the Scientology and the Gay vote ? ;)

Well, a few years ago H Clinton said her favorite book was Blair’s “1984”.

I thought the movie was so bad it was wonderful. Visually it ripped off every great science fiction movie made up to that point and quite a few lame ones.

John Travolta has never been worse and the whole thing with thinking humans ate rats was pretty funny.

It is a very good book.

And perhaps the worst movie ever.

Michael Goldman, a Democratic consultant with the Government Insight Group, chalked it up to one of those “mind blips” that happens in campaigns, but he said the “Battlefield Earth” revelation will hurt Romney. “It’s such a bizarre choice. We don’t necessarily want our president to be Albert Einstein but we don’t want people to make fun of our president either,” Goldman said. In addition to his literary choices, Romney has also been slammed for changing positions on abortion and gay rights.

Ah, the pungent stench of Liberal hypocrisy!

I’ve never read Hubbard’s book.

I have read the Boston Herald daily for more than 40 years in all of its incarnations as I have been able. Heck, I was their best paper boy in the late 1960s.

Anything written these days in the Herald concerning Romney is completely negative and subjective, and to be honest, not worthy of a Free Republic thread.

I used to buy the Globe because of the obituaries, and the Herald is really lacking in that area.

Either the Globe is going to write the Heralds obit, or the other way around, but the way the Herald has been going lately, my betting on the winner is going to change.

The Herald does not seem to know where their bread is buttered.

I’ve been an SF fan all my life. I have a couple of L. Ron Hubbard’s early novels that I bought when they came out. They’re not bad, but certainly not in the first rank.

Battlefield Earth is second-rate schlock. I can think of literally a THOUSAND SF novels that are better, including space opera and military SF, which I enjoy if it’s well done.

Frankly this latest comment just confirms my growing opinion that Mitt Romney is a jerk.
