Mormonism sounds like a science fiction fantasy to some Americans, Prothero said.

First off, this article is really a hit piece on his being a Mormon.
But c'mon, Battlefield Earth may be one of the greatest science fiction stories ever written. I loved it and read it a number of times.
Yet, the writer of this article (and some here on FR) are implying that if you liked this story, you endorse Scientology. This is infantile thinking and shows an incredible lack of critical thinking.

Final Blackout is *much* better and should be required reading (it’s pre-Scientology).

Yes but I made the mistake of NOT being high when I watched it.

Mitt blew a chance here. When asked to name his favorite novel he could have answered Earth in the Balance by Al Gore or Living History by Hillary Clinton.
Instead he answered, probably honestly, Battlefield Earth by the founder of Scientology.
He inadvertently invited a bad association to himself instead of choosing to make a subtle dig at the opposition.

I agree. The movie didn't cover half of what was in the book. But if it did it would have been 6 hours long.

I don’t judge. I actually enjoyed it. A week or two later I went to see Mission Impossible 2 and it was one of the dullest, most horrible movies I’d ever sat through and it makes Battlefield Earth look like one of the greatest Cecil B. DeMille-esque epic spectacles by comparison.

Well, a few years ago H Clinton said her favorite book was Blairs 1984.That makes sense when you consider her role model is Big Brother.

Romney would be suicide for the GOP. The guy is scary - wrong book to cite no matter what. Of all the sci-fi writers out there.

Just how would this be a flip-flop? Did he say he didn’t like Battlefield Earth before? The left sure goes through contortions to reach “bad” conclusions about conservative candidates.

BTW, some of the posters here on FR are acting as if this book is the communist manifesto or some other political rag. This is a SF book and has nothing to do with his politics or religion. Thank the Lord this country is still free enough that we can read what we want and enjoy it. Anyone who thinks this is a bad mark against him needs their head examined.
Just for the record I am a Fred Thomson/Duncan Hunter(either will do) fan myself but can't see making a bid deal out of this. Dems are absolutely bonkers and so are any republicans that think he is terrible for his choice in light reading!

This is one of the best Science Fiction novels ever written. It has nothing to do with any religion. One of my favorites also.
Only an idiot would see some flip flop....geez!
