Military people next January would get a 3.5 percent pay raise, under a compensation package voted Wednesday by the House armed services subcommittee on military personnel.
In shaping the personnel section of the fiscal 2008 defense authorization bill, the subcommittee approved other initiatives too to please healthcare beneficiaries, surviving spouses and some disabled retirees forced from service short of 20 years by combat-related injuries.
The Senate will mark up its version of 2008 defense bill later this month, no doubt approving a somewhat different set of personnel initiatives. A House-Senate conference later will smooth out these differences.
Here are details of what the House panel unanimously approved:

3.5% is not a big pay raise. 5% or more would be closer to big!
It’s still in committee, do I read this right? Therefore it’s not a sure thing.
They haven’t porked out the bill, yet....
I expect they will load it with pork because I can’t see them doing these other things unless they do. They will be able to force the President to sign it because of this. I wouldn’t be surprised to see withdrawl/surrender language added too.
My 1st paycheck, (Army, 1969) paid in cash for a month’s service, was $79.
The men and women who rise their lives for their country more than earn what they’re paid. If anything, they deserve a much bigger raise.
How much did dinner and a movie with your date cost? How much was a pitcher of beer?
For most E-1s through E-4s who lived in the barracks and ate in the mess it was probably not too shabby!
Recovering from the Carter disaster, Ronald Reagan gave us Jr Officers at the time, a 15% raise in his first budget.
God bless him.....
Not complaining, just commenting. BTW, I remember buying Coors around then for about $5 per case. You could get cheap beer for just a few $ per case.
When I first joined you could get Marlboros for about $5 a carton in the commissary. Dorals were about $2. Later, when the bases were forced to raise prices the manufacturers attached coupons for several dollars off to the cartons.
Somewhere along the line the coupons started getting removed. The manufacturers responded with a notice on the carton that there had been a coupon on it and the shopper should notify the manager that it was missing.
They’re just as expensive on base as they are off base.
I’m glad I quit!
The pay doesn’t look bad..... for a 40 hour week. They don’t get OT and confined to the job pay though.
Under which president did you get your last raise?
In 1972, when I was a A1C (E-3) I remember receiving a 100% pay raise, going all the way up to 375.00 per month. The then Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, L. Mendel Rivers, was mostly responsible for that increase.
Some times the hours can really suck! But it’s worth it.
LOL
I quit when the cost went to $0.30/pack, carton for $3.00.
In Berlin they were still that price as late as 1990.
3.5% is a ‘good’ raise. You don’t quit over that. It’s not ‘big’, as others say. 5% is big.
Still, good. Heck, give them 4 or 5 I say.
It ain’t enough. Our men in uniform should earn more substantially than someone in a burger joint. They are dedicated, work long hours, are highly skilled at what they do, and put themselves in harm’s way to protect us. If they have families to care for they barely make ends meet.
Got the last pay raise from President Bush, of course. I can care less about the pay raises at this point (except for active duty). If you read the article, you’ll see they’re giving more than the President requested. I’m more concerned about Tricare fees tripling.......as President Bush requested and the Democrats intend to block. The pay raise isn’t worth crap if Tricare fees go up. You’re not going to get people to devote 20 years of their life in the military when you start to take away benefits.
I’m just so darn disappointed that I have to depend on democrats to block this. It’s just not right. It’s like the twilight zone.
