COURT-ING A DISASTER WITH BASE (Rooty fails abortion test---status in doubt)
NY POST ^ | May 4, 2007 | JOHN PODHORETZ

Posted on 05/04/2007 4:05:09 AM PDT by Liz

.......front-runner Rudy Giuliani may not be the front-runner much longer.........for the most part, his debate performance was lousy. Worse still for him, he was a disaster talking about the very issue he needs to speak most artfully about. That issue, of course, is abortion. Chris Matthews tossed Rudy and the other candidates a softball when he asked what his response would be if he were told that Roe vs. Wade - had been overturned.......All Rudy had to say was that he would believe a constitutional travesty had been overturned and therefore that it would be good day for America. This was a no-brainer. Instead, he offered an answer both intellectually indefensible and politically dense. "It would be OK to repeal it," Rudy said, then quickly added, "It would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as precedent" - the only candidate to say it would be OK. Meaning that he wouldn't mind if Roe were upheld just so long as a conservative justice upheld it. This makes no sense. You either believe a Supreme Court decision should be overturned or you don't. You can't have it both ways. Rudy needs to win the Republican primary, in which the most passionate bloc of voters is pro-life...... His answer last night was insulting to them Rudy did himself harm last night.

So much for Rooty's Big Plan to kick social conservatives off the Repub Party lifeboat; in fact, Rooty is the one who looked seasick, bobbing and weaving on the Reagan Library deck.

Clearly, Right to Life was the Big Winner at the first Repub debate----remaining the key issue from which Repub candidates could not escape.

Moderator Chris Matthews was relentless, forcing the candidates to step up to the pro-life plate over and over. Made no matter that Chrissy was probably rubbing it in, emphasizing Repubs as the pro-life party.

Republicans---the pro-life party---and that's the way it's going to stay.

The candidates always learn that abortion is, and will always be, the issue that separates the men from the boys.

He was for overturning it before he was against it.

By a matter of seconds.

I’m Just Waitin’ On A Fred

Watching girly-men go passing by
It ain’t the latest thing
I’m just standing in a doorway
I’m just trying to make some sense
Out of these girly-men go passing by
The tales of sellout men
I’m not waiting on the Rinos
I’m just waiting on a Fred

His smile relieves a heart that grieves
Remember what I said
I’m not waiting on the Rinos
I’m just waiting on a Fred
I’m just waiting on a Fred

Don’t need a whore
I don’t need no boozer
Don’t need a Mormon priest
But I need someone I can cry to
I need someone to protect me
Making war and breaking heads
It is a game for few
But I’m not waiting on the Rinos
I’m just waiting on a Fred

All is proceeding as I have foreseen. The good ship Juliannie is taking on water and listing left. Only a matter of time until he sleeps with the fishies.

Rudy was so out of his element, probably the most time he has ever spent around actual republicans and a few conservatives.

N-i-c-e observation.........so true. And did you notice Rooty/Jooty did a fast-disappearing act? She went up on the stage when it was over, grabbed him, and they took off. I guess the RINOS wanted to get away from conservatives........ to cry in their beer at Rooty's flopola.

What's most remarkable about this column is that it was written by John Podhoretz -- who has been one of Giuliani's strongest cheerleaders over the last few months even to the point of being delusional and pathological about it.

If this is what Podhoretz is saying, then I think it's a safe bet that Giuliani's performance last night was a complete disaster.

My thoughts precisely——and if by some strange osmosis Rooty had scored a biggie last night, Podheretz would be singing a different tune.

It’s amazing how these types slip back and forth between their various personnae.

I am just so sick of Republicans always agreeing to hobble themselves in some way to try to appease the left. Agreeing to allow Chris Matthews to moderate the debate? Insanity.

The Dems didn’t have any problem with bailing out of a Fox hosted debate on the grounds that Fox is a biased network. So, the idiot Repubs agree to a lightweight hack like Matthews to try to prove . . . what? That they are idiots who are willing to handicap themselves in the race for the White House in order to seek the approval of the left . . . which will never happen anyway.

I think this is one of the reasons that Fred Thompson is so appealing. He is articulate and unapologetic about being a conservative.

And darn proud of it!

What about when Matthews asked "do you think Clinton should be BACK in the WH"? NO! Why would he bring up a dem at a REPUBLICAN debate?

Social conservatives can cling to this issue right through Hitlery’s innaugeration party.

If Rudy appointed strict constructionists is doesn’t matter
what he believes personally - or how he might react to a decision because when the court decides its out of his hands.

There is no right to abortion in the constitution - it is likewise not constitutional to ban partial birth abortion at the federal level (IMHO). This is a state matter and it is possible to be in favor of abortion but astute enough to know the constitutio does not provide it as a right and also intellectually honest enough to accept that truth. Its like accpeting the rules of any game - you may not like them but if you are honest you accept them for what they are.

We true conservatives have often chided democrats for using the courts to get things that are not in the law and not even constitutional. I am not going to join that crowd.

I’ll be honest - I like Mr. G. because underneath it all he’s mean. The other candiates either cant win or are crazy or are not tough enough to take on the democrats. That’s the problem with our current president. He’s too nice.

I actually did not watch, had my back to the tube and listened. A couple of times when I could not identify the sound of the voice I turned to see who was speaking.

I wanted to listen and hear just how canned the responses would be. Romney was the most silver tongued speaker. Rudy seemed to have never been asked or thought much about many of the questions and it became difficult for his canned responses to apply to the actual questions.

While Rudy was blowing it on that litmus test, any threads addressing the other one: gun control?

Rooty is the one who looked seasick...

He sure as hell didn't look comfortable... definitely not his rah-rah, effervescent self. Rootie was a L O S E R last night... Romney and Hunter were ready for action.

Infanticide is not a 'state issue' and that is what 'partial birth' abortion was.

Yeah what was that all about. Chris Mathews is insane himself. The man is a total enemy of all on the stage and they ask him to moderate? Why didnt they ask Eleonor Clift? hell: Why not go all the way and ask Howard Dean?

I don’t know why this should be a surprise to anyone.

Rudy is likeable - he was a fantastic mayor, but he has never really been a true republican.

This has been a no-brainer from the beginning.
