Iraqi Democracy Votes Out Bush, Elects Sadr
The Prometheus Institute ^ | 5/4/2007 | M. Harrison

Posted on 05/04/2007 6:24:59 AM PDT by tang0r

America doesn't need a liberal Iraqi democracy to be safe; America needs to stop creating al-Qaida recruiting videos with its own foreign policy. The United Arab Emirates serve as an example of a friendly Middle Eastern nation; one that doesn't require American Democracy to avoid abetting terrorist cells, and one that apparently doesn't require American invasion. Supporters of the Iraqi occupation talk often of bringing "freedom" for the Iraqi people. But what is freedom for Iraqis, but from the war that is gripping them and destroying their lives?

We should end the debate once and for all. America should put forth a national referendum, asking all Iraqis, "Do you want the immediate and gradual withdrawal of the United States military from Iraq?" Of course, all know what the answer will be. One can only hope Mr. Bush has the humility to accept the democratic expression he has created. Let freedom reign.

Iraqi Democracy Votes Out Bush, Elects Sadr

I have never read greater nonsense. All Sadrist ministers resigned. The Sadrists have 27 seats in the parliament out of 275. The majority of Iraqis voted for parties cooperating with the USA and opposing a withdrawal. Sadr is a punk leading an illiterate mob of slum dwellers.

You have it exactly right - Sadr's value has always been vastly over-hyped by everyone from the Western MSM to many on here......

LOL, good grief, the Islamic cults and their sympathizers have been whining for 30 years that “Israel made me do it”!

And now their new excuse for blowing up women and children in the marketplace is the US in Iraq?

Yawn.

I wonder if this writer lives in New York and thinks the entire nation of the USA is just like New York.

That would be roughly like thinking Iraq is as Sadr City.

I think M. Harrison didn’t catch that the 80% of the Arab elites are antiamerican and promote jihad.

They are corrupted and hold the media.

So if he doesn’t want Boeings in the American buildings, he may reconsider his point of view and understand that DEMOCRACY is necessary to fight jihad.

It is a fight of ideas much more than a fight of arms.

If the US had left Japan without a democratic system, you would be at war with each other by now. Democracy and freedom means longterm stability. That's why jihadists fight in Iraq so hard. They know if they give up they would lose a major battle of the WoT. To all Freepers, don't listen to the voices of facility or scorn. What the US should do is to promote more democracy in the MA instead of talking about withdrawal or change of strategy.

From a USA Today poll taken in Iraq in early March:

How long do you think U.S. and othe coalition forces should remain in Iraq? They should ...

Leave now 35%
Remain until security is restored 38%
Remain until the Iraqi government is stronger 15%
Remain until the Iraqi security forces can operate independently 11%
Remain longer but leave eventually 2%
Never leave 1%

Totals for those who want the U.S to stay longer 67%

When you say cooperating with the USA, are you talking about all of the quality legislation coming out of the Iraqi Parliament these days, right? (sarcasm) That parliament, of which Maliki is an important figure, knows what the US wants done, but will not do it. Likewise, Iran knows what the US wants it to do but that government will not do it either. The political reality on the ground is that most of the Iraqi government is cooperating with Iran against US interests. That is a fact that the Department of State has been unable to prevent.

Why? Probably because they listen to Iraq's Arab neighbors who are telling them the US should let up on Iran. They think the US should let up because they perceive the US to be the aggressor in this war. They're wrong. Revolutionary Iran is the aggressor with a geopolitical edge. This war is happening in Iran's back yard. Unfortunately, the old bureaucracies of the Middle East have been against this project from its opening shots. For a variety of reasons the DOS has not been able to sell American goals to them. That's DOS's job and they aren't willing or able to do it. It's sad that the Sec State can't prevent Iran from dominating Iraqi politics. These same Middle Eastern leaders who want America out must be betting there will be little or no violent leakage outside of Iraq's borders when the US goes. I hope not but, I think they're going to be wrong about that too.

Seriously, it doesn't matter how hard American service members fight in the streets - it doesn't matter how many doors they kick in, IEDs they disarm or babies they save if the Sec State can't hold or take new political ground. At the same moment real counter insurgency tactics were adopted by the Army, DOS began giving signals to Iran that this war is over. The timing of these two things could not be more ridiculous if it were a comedy. If this war can't be won militarily it must be won in the Iraqi Parliament and in the halls of neighboring governments. Are we winning there? And by we I'm talking about the Iraqis and Americans.

What a moron! You cannot logically have both an immediate and a gradual withdrawal. It's not logically possible.

Second, Iraqis have been polled ad infinitum on this and the majority do not want the US to leave until Iraq is stable.

The source is a Libertarian blog.

That explains the writer’s anti-war, seclusionist position.
