Thompson's Politics Much Like McCain's [here come the 'hit' pieces]
Washington Post ^ | May 06, 2007

Posted on 05/05/2007 6:55:48 PM PDT by jdm

Fred Thompson fervently backed the Iraq war, railed against an expanding federal government, took stands that occasionally annoyed his party and rarely spoke about his views on social issues during his tenure as a senator from Tennessee or in his writings and speeches since leaving office.

In short, the man some in the GOP are touting as a dream candidate has often sounded like the presidential hopeful many of them seem ready to dismiss: Sen. John McCain (Ariz.).

With some in the party clamoring for an alternative to their current field of presidential contenders and Thompson's allies hinting strongly that he will run, 400 conservatives flocked to Newport Beach, Calif., on Friday night to hear the actor-turned-politician-turned-actor address the annual dinner of the Lincoln Club of Orange County, a group that credits itself with pushing Ronald Reagan to run for governor of California in the 1960s. Thompson delivered a vision of cutting taxes, reducing the size of government, overhauling Social Security and staying in Iraq until "there is some semblance of stability."

Obviously a bit of a 'hit' piece.

Doesn't the headline of "Thompson's Politics Much Like McCain's" mirror the now infamous Giuliani quote:

"Most of Clinton's policies are very similar to most of mine"

Rudy Giuliani, NY Post, 1996

This writer is attempting to paint Thompson as a moderate to liberal Republican (versus a Conservative) which is just so way off and wrong it's deplorable.

The gutter maggots of the MSM are afraid of Thompson. That is the reason for this typical MSM excrement.

The author of this piece is Perry Bacon Jr. My sincere apologies for not adding his name in the “author” field. Oversight on my part.

Honestly I’m not hearing a lot of things I really need to hear about Thompson. I want to know more about past deals he may have made with democrats so I can get a read on how he might behave in the face of democrat opposition in the white house.

As much as I would love to have Fred as President, I believe that he is going to decide not to run. Why? Because he knows that there is no way in hell his belief in a Federalist system will be adopted by those already in power. The Dems sure won't go along with it, and the GOP has shown they are just about as addicted to the power game as the Dems. There just aren't enough people left with the belief in limited government to make it work, I'm afraid.

Hayek wrote that the founders were wrong in believing that the constitution would suffice in protecting our freedoms. However our weakness in permitting it to be violated so long as it furthered what we believed to be "good" is what brought us to this point.

McCain is too old. Just look at how the presidency has aged George Bush, and I can’t see it getting any easier for the next president in this dangerous age.

Their strategy will be to divide and conquer. Looks like it is partially successful already. I have seen some posts that state they will not vote for Mitt because he is a Mormon. So brace yourselves.

During the eight years that Thompson and McCain served together, they cast votes on 102 CQ-defined key votes and agreed on 83 of them - or 81.4 percent of the time. They disagreed 18.6% of the time, that’s pretty high considering that both are Republicans and both are considered relatively conservative. Just as an example from one year, among the instances in which Thompson and McCain differed were votes in 2002 to effectively extend a repeal of the estate tax beyond 2010, to authorize oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and to postpone tougher automobile fuel efficiency standards. Thompson voted “aye” and McCain voted “no” in all three cases.

The thing that bothers me about these pieces is there lack of understanding about Conservatism, there are some differences among Conservatives, but the agreed on things are set principles that cannot be changed without the candidate facing a loss of support.

If I catch the gist of what you’re saying, you’re cautioning us that, great as Thompson may be, he is after all a (gasp!) Politician. Rest assured my FRiend, most of us are tracking right with ya!

“Politics is the best show in America. I love animals and I love politicians and I love to watch both of ‘em play either back home in their native state or after they have been captured and sent to the zoo or to Washington.” - Will Rogers
