NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- ''Will he announce?'' asked the Lincoln Club of Orange County's publication in preparation for Fred Thompson's appearance at the organization's 45th annual dinner here Friday night. A rumor, totally unfounded, ran rampant before his speech that Thompson would declare his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination at the dinner lectern. In fact, he did not even hint at this prospect in a performance that was a letdown for the packed audience of conservative Republicans.
''It was not Reaganesque.'' ''No red meat.'' ''Too low key.'' That was the preponderant reaction I heard to Thompson's half-hour presentation (leavened by a few favorable comments, mostly by women, that he was more ''statesmanlike'' and ''presidential'' than the announced candidates). Lincoln Club members, like many conservative Republicans, had been unimpressed by the existing field of Republican hopefuls and envisioned Thompson as the second coming of Ronald Reagan. They did not get it Friday night.

I thought it was a great speech. He is someone I will support unlike liberal Rudy and some of the other candidates.
I have to admit - I have watched it 3 times now - I also
thought it was terrific.
Novak is just mad he made the trip to S.C. and didn’t get
an announcement or an exclusive.
Hey, Jake. How do you see the speech? Is there a link somewhere?
Thanks.
It’s been posted several times already. But since each paper seems to use a different headline, it’s not your fault.
Same article is in the sidebar.
Sorry about that - gosh I hate to be a repeat poster - I should do a better job of checking before I get myself excited.
Thanks - I will do better in the future at checking.
I am unimpressed by Robert Novak.
I’m sure some folks haven’t seen it.
Novak often comes across as an angry old man.
With all the battles he has fought over his life - I guess it’s somewhat understandable.
I read him.
He has one heck of a political pipeline.
I personally don’t put much stock into what this author says about anything....he’s a rat ... remember...
I think when Fred says he’s running, he will be the next President of the United States of America....
Well as Fred mentioned in his opening remarks, he was trying to keep Bob from seeing his notes. Guess Bob didn’t take the joke well.
This Novak column didn’t ‘wow’ me.
“I am unimpressed by Robert Novak.”
Same here. He’s been phoning it in since 1989.
LLS
He’s attractive - to be sure.
I think everyone is nervous because he WILL NOT get in line
and fit the predefined mold.
He’s doing this his way - and that makes conformists nervous.
Yeah - I agree.
The debate are worthless until maybe September - October.
