Cheney Visits Iraq
By TOM RAUM 05.09.07, 2:25 AM ET
Vice President Dick Cheney sought to encourage reconciliation among rival Iraqi factions on Wednesday in an unannounced visit to Baghdad, emphasizing that the current U.S. military buildup alone is not end the conflict.
Cheney made Iraq the first stop of a weeklong trip to the Middle East aimed at redoubling efforts to end divisive infighting among Iraq's ethnic factions.
He got a firsthand briefing on conditions from Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and the new U.S. ambassador here, Ryan Crocker.

Darn, if nobody knew about it, then none of the Democrats were told.

I was kind of hoping that he would tell Maliki to trim their vacation by about six weeks.

AFP:[ The stopover here [Baghdad] is part of a broader visit to the Middle East, with planned stops in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan to get support from Sunni governments for Iraq's Sunni minority in a bid to convince them to join Iraq's fledgling political process. ]

I also get nervous about these long trips the Veep is taking in view of his history of blood clots in the legs.
However, the Bush bad-cop bench is one-piece-of tissue-paper thin with Bolton gone. Methinks Cheney's mission is to lay the law down to recalcitrant Iraqis as only he can.
Forget anyone in the State or Defense departments capable of doing what it takes to be tough.
Too bad Bush is left with an Army of One (Dick Cheney) when it comes to tough talk when few options are left.
