HUNTER SUCCESSFULLY OFFERS SHIPYARD WORKERS AMENDMENT

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA), ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, successfully offered an amendment to H.R. 1585, the FY2008 National Defense Authorization Act, ensuring American shipyards hire American workers. The Armed Services Committee unanimously passed the Hunter amendment by voice vote during its mark-up of the legislation.

“American shipbuilders are some of the most skilled and productive workers in the world,” said Congressman Hunter. “Our shipyards remain a critical component of our nation’s strategic manufacturing base and it is important that this industry be preserved for, and strengthened by, American workers. This amendment rightfully ensures that our naval ships will continue being built by the hands of American workers and not recruited foreign labor.”

The Hunter amendment specifically prohibits the use of funds at shipbuilding yards that hire foreign workers until shipbuilders can demonstrate an attempt to recruit and hire American workers first. The amendment also requires that the United States Navy identify shipyards with potential labor surpluses within the next five years as part of its annual shipbuilding plan, so that shipyards may better identify where additional workers can be recruited.

The bad news is that American shipyards have long had problems with meeting budgets and delivery schedules.

Another thing I believe that a 'President Hunter' could address.

Do you think the C-130 would have turned out as well as it did if Lockheed hadn’t hired the best aircraft engineers from England that it could find? Do you think the US would have won the race to the moon without the Germans in the rocket program?

Military procurement should center around getting the best product for our fighting men at the lowest cost. It shouldn’t be run as a jobs program for the unions. If you want to see how the story is likely to end, look at Airbus.

It looks like this sailed through the democrat controlled Congress.

As I recall, Reagan “pandered” to unions too by promoting buying American. On the other hand I suspect Hunter would have treated the Airlines the same way Reagan did as well.

Seriously I really have to wonder about the loyalties of people who are so desperate to keep us at the mercy of foreign countries.

Thanks for the ping. I guess this means that Duncan Hunter isn’t a Fleecetrade Republican.

Just be sure to ditch all of the 3” guns (Italian design, made by BAE in America, but since they employee British executives, pull the weapons), and the 57mm (Swedish design, BAE made) as well.

Where did Hunter say that we can’t buy products from our allies? Right, he never did.
