HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Rudy Giuliani strongly defended his support for abortion rights in the heart of the largely pro-life South yesterday while fielding questions that have dogged him since last week's Republican presidential debate.
Giuliani continued to maintain that while he personally opposes abortion, the option should be available to women.
"I don't intend to change either one of those positions," he said during a press conference outside the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. "There has to be a right to choose."
Questions about Giuliani's abortion position were fueled yesterday after Pope Benedict XVI said priests should deny Holy Communion to politicians who support abortion.
"I do not get into debates with the pope. It's not a good idea. Issues like that are between me and my confessor," Giuliani said.
But Giuliani's position - and the fact that he contributed $900 to abortion provider Planned Parenthood - has only ignited more criticism from activists on both sides of the issue.
He defended his donation, saying the group gives counseling on abortion and other options that square with his position.
Giuliani brushed off his critics and said it will be voters who will ultimately decide whether his pro-choice stance is acceptable in the context of his entire platform and record as mayor.
"I guess we'll find out. Is it an acceptable position? I'm at peace with it," he said.
On another hot-button issue in the South, Giuliani also defended his strong stance on gun control, while defending the constitutional right to own guns.

I certainly hope Fred Thompson runs Rudy right off the track.

The same “choice” argument could be constructed to make ANYTHING “available to women”, or to men and children, for that matter.
But in this case, the “choice” is the murder of a human being.
I can’t vote for this guy.
I just can’t.
He’s a panderer with no moral compass.
If he can dismiss the murder of over 4000 babies a day as a “woman’s right to choose” which baby shall live and which shall die, how can he complain when the MoHAMheads kill 3000 Americans in a day?
What moral ground does he have to stand on?
After all, don’t the MoHAMheads ALSO have a right to choose who shall live and who shall die?
Liberal Logic is so twisted. There is just no reckoning with it.
I love it when Rudy shoots himself in the foot :)
Rudy just lost the nomination.
Rudy the RINO can’t hide his horns.
Rudy: “There has to be a right to choose.”
Excuse me, but this does not sound like the words of someone who has promised to appoint strict constructionists to the supreme court.
As for the “I’m satisfied” and “that’s between me and my confessor” - sounds like Rudy has been hanging around with Hannity too much. When a public figure publicly renounces the laws of the church (Giuliani on abortion, Hannity on birth control), it is a scandal to the faithful. Either you’re a Catholic or you’re not. Picking and choosing what tenets of the faith you will and will not obey can not be resolved through confession. Confession requires repentence and the desire to “sin no more”. If Rudy’s satisfied with himself, then he denies he has sinned at all, which is a scandal.
And defending donations to Planned Parenthood because they provide “counseling services” is the most laughable lie of all. They provide abortions and politically advocate the right to an abortion. I don’t think too many teenage girls go to PP for “counseling”. Nor do I suspect that this “counseling” is ever to encourage the girl to have the baby.
If the Republican Party is morally bankrupt enough to nominate him....
I can't even finish my thought!
If only Rudy had stuck to the pro-life position of the Catholic Church.
Let me help
....they will go down to an ignominious defeat.
Let me help
....they will go down to an ignominious defeat.
I hope so because the very soul of the Republican party is at stake.
BillyBoy Clinton was infamous for “triangulating” issues.
RudyBoy is “quadrillionating” issues——giving every side a piece of the action.
The guy figures he gets 1-2 votes from each statement; they’ll all vote for him thinking Rooty is on their side.
As if exemptions from the unchanging teaching of the Church are carved out for Rudy in the confessional.
Rudy is implicitly and explicitly wrong on so many levels of Catholic teaching that I wouldn't even know where begin to fully deconstruct it.
Shameful and scandalous. He'll get my prayers but not my vote.
I personally oppose terrorism, but I support their right to obtain nukes....
Let’s see, while in power the Repubs. failed to push ANY conservative agenda.
Spent money like socialist democraps.
Allowed illegals to continue in to the country like it was merely a jobs fair.
Continued to support RINOs for office.
Failed to go after the Clinton crime syndicate.
Failed to stop the likes of my former congressman, Foley.
I can go on here but, morally bankrupt? pretty much summerizes things.
This guy disgust me the more I hear from him. There is no way in hell roooooooty gets my vote.
We are on record as never having been supporters of Rudy Giuliani, and I might add never will be.
We do note his intent with his approach recently is to get back on track so to speak with his focus. He briefly entertained courting Conservatives by attempting to create the perception he was against abortion, however one cannot go up and down in an elevator simultaneously, and Rudy attempted the impossible.
He is a Liberal that is dangerous to the identification of the Republican Party, thus a danger to the definition of Conservatism. He has to be eliminated from the Party.
Rudy should be running on the Democrat ticket not only for himself to succeed, but for Conservatives to remain viable. Republicans cannot succeed presenting a Candidate that instills confusion to the Conservative message as the Republican base is Conservative.
There’s more to his Liberal campaign than the superficial.
NO RUDY PERIOD.
Great line!
