A good reason to have a plan where yoo want to go to ride out a pandemic (if not staying home), and a plan when to leave and how to get there (map of back roads and/or GPS)

There is a pandemic coming. There is nothing new in history. Pandemics have come in the past, they will come in the future.

There are people looking toward the future trying to figure out what that pandemic will be. The really scary thing is that our society is much different than it used to be.

1. We are a just in time delivery economy. In event of a disaster, the stores will empty with no way to refill them.

2. We as a society have lost structure. People in general do not choose to do the right thing, they choose to do their own thing regardless of the consequences. A quarantine will need to be enforced at the barrel of a gun.

3. Thanks to changes in pay structure introduced by the Clintons, almost all vaccine production in this country has stopped leaving us poorly able to respond quickly to a pandemic.

4. Even if the pandemic is adequately anticipated with adequate time to prepare, there are knuckleheads that will put themselves and those around them at risk because they are afraid to get a shot.

You shouldn’t live in fear but you should give this matter a great deal of respect. Americans are lucky, we haven’t seen death on a large scale but it still happens and will eventually happen here.

De Montaigne wrote a little about plague conditions where the workers wouldn’t go into the fields because they were distressed at the bodies everywhere. It’s a little tough finding a place to go in a pandemic. Many of de Montaigne’s neighbors passed the time digging their own graves and some just climbed right in if they weren’t feeling well.

Know it well having worked with Emergency guys on their major disaster drills many times over the years.

We do what we can with what we've got.

If you plan to relocate to ride out a disaster, why would you wait until bodies started dropping? I have a plan where to go and when to leave, before the Guard shows up. In event of disaster I’d prefer to live (or die) among extended family over the mountains from here, instead of being “quarantined” in proximity to already lawless social misfits who inhabit govt housing up the street from my house!

Truthfully our incompetents in emergency management agencies of govt are squandering time by not entering into partnerships with local churches to provide central points to disburse medical help, food, water, other supplies (pet food) - and public information (!) during a grave national crisis.

Once the local hospital is overwhelmed and all 200 regular firefighters, EMT, et al. are supplemented with 2000 amateurs with next to no training and the military is also infected and dropping at post next to their rifles, reality will set in. Fortunately if the pandemic is that hot it will also blow over quickly; it’s one of the rules of the plague.

Then you're into the Interdivisional Box area and hospital administrators are becoming familiar with the term "surge capacity".

You know, we've never, ever thought to partner up with the private sector in the event of a large scale emergency....

/sarcasm.

Thanks, It's been a while since anyone has mentioned something I haven't already done or on my list of 'to-do's'. Entry #1,203: Dig Graves.

The most sane of comments.

Since the word 'sane' is rarely ever used when someone speaks of or to me, I will thank you most graciously and congratulate you on your perspicacity and excellent judge of character.

"BLOAT - Buy lots of ammo today!"

Good advice.

Anything like this, or full martial law, will be ordered not to protect the populace but to protect the federal government.

Yes, they really do think we are that stupid...

No agenda here.

Of course not. The timing of this report was purely coincidental and non-political.

The National Guard may be needed to hold up the sky.

If an envirmental nutcase decides the earth needs purging of the human virus - and starts a plague -- the National Guard "may be needed" ... ( bet they won't run with this hypothetical...)

These people will do anything to get people to take the flu shots. When such a push is put on about medicine like this it’s scary. My doctor said I should get the shot. I’ve never had a flu shot but everyone I know that has had it, got sick.

A couple of years back during a flu vaccine shortage - my doctor asked if I would consider skipping that year -- he had other patients who needed the shot more. I did. Luckily I didn't get the flu.

You might see this issue differently if you get the flu.

Problem is, the churches are held at arms length as part of the “private sector”

None of the very large churches (large buildings, large grounds, central locations) in my community has had any interface with federal disaster agencies to serve a public function, such as field hospital, food and water distribution, public information clearinghouse, in the event of a pandemic (slowly unfolding but relentless) disaster that breaks down community life and services as we know them.

The churches will undoubtedly pitch in ad hoc if and when the time comes but no one is laying it all out in advance, right now. I would guess that if that day arises, the hungry thirsty clueless and sick secularists and atheists will stow their objections about maintaining church-state separation.

Not by my Agency they aren't. We love 'em.

This is a good thing. I'll bet your local EMA has had contact with them, though. Repeat after me: "All disaster responses are local. All disaster responses are local..."

The churches will undoubtedly pitch in ad hoc if and when the time comes but no one is laying it all out in advance, right now.

Oh yes we are. Give your local EMA a call and ask to speak to the director. I'll bet you'll be suprised what's in his or her filing cabinet regarding public-private partnerships.

You might also want to google "VOAD". Those folks are invaluable.

Fairbanks has no Interdivisional Box. It is the whole Box and the next Box is 300 miles away.
