Report: National Guard May Be Needed to Enforce Quarantine in Flu Pandemic

WASHINGTON —

Military and civilian health facilities will be overwhelmed if a nationwide flu pandemic hits the United States, and the National Guard may have to be called out to provide medical help and even enforce a quarantine, the Defense Department warned in a report released Wednesday.

As the Pentagon fights criticism from congressional Democrats that the war in Iraq is depleting the National Guard's ability to help out in domestic crises, the 86-page report says a possible pandemic could require National Guard assistance in supplying medical aid or isolating groups of people to minimize further spread of the disease.

About 3 million people could die as a result of a possible pandemic, with up to 35 percent of the population falling ill, reads the report dated August 2006 and titled "The Department of Defense Implementation Plan for Pandemic Influenza."

According to the report, in the event of a pandemic or a bioterror attack, the Defense Department may be called by the president to assist civilian authorities in minimizing the spread of disease by placing restrictions on interstate transportation. Jurisdictions, the report adds, would be overwhelmed and unable to provide essential commodities and services. In addition, the nation will not be able to rely on airlines.

The Emergency people enjoy their drills and get to pretend they would be of any use at all if it gets really big.

These people will do anything to get people to take the flu shots. When such a push is put on about medicine like this it’s scary. My doctor said I should get the shot. I’ve never had a flu shot but everyone I know that has had it, got sick. That tells me that the body is trying to get rid of that stuff. I just told my doctor I’ll take my chances, I don’t want to get sick.

I'd like to add that the National Guard is significantly under prepared to respond to a major Martian Attack on Des Moines, Iowa... if one were to occur.

This vulnerable state is due to the Bush policies in Iraq and lack of concern for early primary state residents.

I sincerely hope that the DEM candidates can effectively make this point as they campaign. I also hope that the MSM will allow their message to get out to those who need to hear.

As far as the "supposed threat" from our Muslim brothers and sisters, I ask... "Why can't we just all get along?"

While you have a point about the ‘we’re all gonna die’ aspect, the fact is we are way way overdue for a pandemic of some type.

You can only hold off ‘mother nature’ thinning the herd for so long, then she lets loose the entire can of whup ass in one shot - see Katrina.

Intelligent people use the time available to prepare for such events.

OMG...what if TWO flu pandemics break out. Or a flu pandemic coupled with an Ebola pandemic...then we’re really screwed.

I’d suggest reading up on how immunizations work. In the scientific literature.

Um, there isn't any flu epidemic.

Just thought I'd clarify that, since the first duty of a rational man when people around him go stark raving mad, is to restate the obvious.

the first duty of a rational man

Is to stockpile kleenex.

In a bunker. Out back.

When society collapses, there's gonna be two kinds of people: The haves, and those wiping their noses on their sleeves!

Obviously. Is this like that imaginary bird-flu pandemic that was going to kill billions upon billions?

The surrender monkey’s talking point. This has nothing to do with the Guard and everything to do with Iraq.
