Giuliani admits pro-choice views - RINOS: the reign of social conservatives is coming to an end

HOUSTON — In a shift of tactics, Republican presidential contender Rudolph Giuliani acknowledged his liberal views Friday, calling a woman's right to choose an abortion one of his "core beliefs."

After a week of criticism for making contradictory comments about abortion, Giuliani also said he backs gay domestic partnerships that aren't marriage and the right of states to restrict guns.

Meanwhile, in an article titled "Behind Giuliani's Pro-Choice Gamble," found at www.Time.com, author David Von Drehle states that "Giuliani's decision to be more forthright about his pro-choice stance on abortion may be the boldest step of the Presidential campaign so far. And while it's certainly a gamble, because it will likely inflame the social-issue conservatives who form a key minority in the Republican party, it's far from reckless. On the contrary, it is the first tangible sign that a candidate did some hard thinking about the radically changed nature of this year's primary schedule and, in Giuliani's case, decided that the reign of social conservatives is coming to an end."

Giuliani, a New York Catholic who once considered the priesthood, chose to make his stand before a conservative, Protestant audience at Houston Baptist University in an appearance arranged just Wednesday.

His embrace of abortion, which dramatically sets him apart from his Republican rivals, represents a political gamble that his campaign felt he had to take since his liberal views as New York City mayor in the 1990s give him little room to maneuver.

"I believe abortion is wrong," he said. But out of respect for other people's fervent support of abortion, he said, "I would grant to women the right to make that choice."

Giuliani said his views have evolved, but those two "core beliefs" always have and always will guide him.

Conservatives have held their boot on the neck of the GOP for far too long!

"We have to be on the offense against terrorism," he said. "And we have to be on the offense to preserve our private economy."

...which is why we should be electing a military man with rock-solid experience, and rock-solid Conservative views.

How the WOT is somehow perceived as Giuliani's strength in the face of far better candidates with broader military and foreign relations experience is a non-sequitur, and quite beyond me.

"Giuliani also asserted that his views on gay rights and gun control are not that different from conservatives."

This is going to be fun. After he spent the last number of months lying about his position on abortion to try to fool pro-life voters and now has admitted to his real views after no one bought his lies, he's going to go through the very same thing as his lies about his views on the gay agenda and gun control are exposed. He really, kinda makes this easy. His record and statements are out there for everyone to see (thank you Al Gore for inventing the Internet) and after a while he starts to sound silly trying to "nuance" every statement on the issues he knows he's vulnerable on. I love to see him squirm like the liberal worm that he is. We've got to keep squeezing him and one day hill finally pop like a zit and his candidacy will no longer blemish the Republican Party.

“Why is he running on the Republican ticket?”

He’s New York City’s version of a Republican.

Makes you wanna move there, don’t it?

“the reign of social conservatives is coming to an end.”

I take that to be a claim about electoral demographics. And it might be true.

Wether that’s a good thing or not is a separate issue.

FWIW I’ll follow whichever crowd works to shrink the size of government and open up markets to competition. YMMV.

Giuliani believes in the rights of States to restrict Gun ownership but not in the rights of States to restrict abortion?

What a sick phony Giuliani is.

"Why is he running on the Republican ticket?"

Immediately before I got to your post, that is exactly what popped into mind. Why IS he running on the GOP ticket?

Hunter is looking better and better every day.

“the reign of social conservatives is coming to an end.”

And Rudy apparently wants to position himself to personally lead the final retreat and sign the surrender documents. What a goal to have for oneself.

"Conservatives have held their boot on the neck of the GOP for far too long!"

================================

You are right.
It's time to remove our boot from the GOPs throat and kick it in the ass until it gets the message:

WE WILL NOT SUPPORT A LIBERAL, AND YOU NEED US.

And there's the rub, they DO need us and if they think they don't, if Rudy and his minions can convince them that they don't, the Party is over.

The heart and soul of the GOP is the prize.

To the winner goes the spoils.

It's on.

It's been on for some time.

Glad to see FR is up to speed.

Naw, Rudy, what is about to happen is that a bunch of folks are about to dig in and push back, hard! You are really becoming an aggravating little metrosexual pain in the arse!

Holding out defeat to the Democrats in next year's election, Giuliani pleaded for Republicans to adopt a "big tent" approach, permitting differing views on less important issues.

Rudy, if he wins the nomination, is thus pushing to change the Republican party platform. I have news for you Rudy. Ain't gonna happen, and you can take that to the bank.
