WELLINGTON (AFP) - Nine-year-old Jack Russell terrier George is being honoured with a posthumous bravery medal for saving five New Zealand children from an attack by two pitbulls.

Hudman, 58, of Austin, Texas was a US Marine for 30 years and said he decided to send his Purple Heart to George's owner Alan Gay after reading the news on the Internet because the dog was "a little warrior".

While this is a heart wrenching story, I would suggest that a Purple Heart, given to those who were wounded or killed in war, is not an appropriate medal to bestow on an animal. It does not surprise me that a Nam vet would be the one to do it.

I don't quite know what you meant by the snide remark about the vet, but I would suggest that if the rightful owner of said Purple Heart felt moved to give his medal to an animal, it is appropriate. It could be argued that it's inappropriate for the govt. to do so, but not the recipient.

He had three. Who are you to tell this man what to do with any of them? Unnecessary snottiness on your part.

I bet if John Kerry still had his medals, he’d give one to the pooch’s owner, too.

It was a slam on Viet Nam vets. Read it again.

I thought he did. Didn't Kerry throw his medals away over a fence? It had to have been a dog that "mysteriously" retrieved them in time for 2004!

Sir,

Your perception is not reality!

You have no idea whether it was a slam or not; only I know what it is.

Get off the cross, we need the wood.
