(MN) Gas tax increase clears Legislature

Minnesota legislators set course for a historic showdown with Gov. Tim Pawlenty on Monday, approving a transportation bill that features a gas-tax increase and other revenue hikes that would cost a typical three-car family in the Twin Cities between $250 and $500 a year.

The bill -- which raises $6.4 billion in new taxes and fees over 10 years -- passed on bipartisan votes barely strong enough to override Pawlenty's promised veto.

And so it begins. Minnesota's gas tax is twenty cents a gallon.

What kind of an idiot raises gas taxes when the price is already insanely high?

Is it me, or has there been a lot of idiotic legislation ideas coming out of the Land of 10,000 Mokes recently? I know Texas had the guardasil debacle, but we are straightening Perry out on that one.

A Democrat, perhaps?

It's not just Minnesota, it's all of these upper Midwest states that are committing suicide.

Pretty soon, the bulk of the nation's population is going to be centered in the South and Southwest.

I’m glad I don’t live in Minnesota anymore. Gubmint is trying to tax us out of our homes first, now they are taxing us out of our cars. And the higher the price per gallon, the more the gubmint pulls in!

When I can’t get out of the grocery store for less than $40 a pop, I wonder how younger, less affluent couples can get along with families to feed. The dollar is now 3 cents of what it was in the 1950’s when I had young children. Something’s got to give and soon!

I've raged against that crap nationwide until I can't rage any more. I'm quitting. Our "republican" governor just raised our tobacco sin tax 44 cents. I won't pay it. He can find somebody else to make up for the thousands I've poured into the state coffers. He can also look elsewhere for a re-election vote in 2008. Maybe the obese man who almost punched me for smoking 100 yards from the door of my job in 2002 can start paying his share.

—Wisconsin is highest at 32.1 cents/gallon—

You need to include the percentages described in the comments. Gasbuddy includes them in the list, California’s taxes taken together is ~45¢.

Um...Wisconsin’s is 32.1 cents per gallon, second only to NY which is at 33.55 cents per gallon.

Funny how our BLUE states all have higher gasoline taxes, ain’t it? MN is just falling into lock-step. *SIGH*
