Eric Johnson not only has jumped on the Fred Thompson-for-President bandwagon in Georgia, but he also is apparently driving it.
Johnson, a Savannahian and the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, has urged his GOP Senate colleagues to endorse Thompson.
Thompson, a former U.S. senator and character actor, has said he is considering a try for the party nomination.
Johnson's move resembles those by Republican legislators in at least two other states.
"They're trying to create at least the appearance of a groundswell of support to induce him to get into the race," said Atlanta political consultant David Johnson.
In an e-mail co-authored by Sen. Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock, Sen. Johnson said he believes an announcement by Thompson is imminent.
He called Thompson "a leader like Ronald Reagan who will step forward and lead with a compelling conservative vision for our country's future."
But he also said he believes it would be smart for Georgia Republicans to get in on the ground floor.
"Once he announces," Sen. Johnson argued, "support will surge in like a tidal wave.
"We believe we have a small window of opportunity to really stand out in the eyes of the country and the mind of our future president if we stand tall for him now."
He noted that a majority of Republicans in the Texas House and several Senate Republicans there signed a petition backing Thompson.
"This has generated a huge momentum boost for Fred's campaign," Johnson said, "I think it would benefit our state to provide vital early support for our next President."
In the most recent Georgia statewide poll, Thompson moved into third place, behind former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain. The same thing happened this week in Florida.
The e-mail was addressed to all the other Georgia Senate Republicans and several GOP House members, including all three from Chatham County.
Sen. Johnson could not be reached late Tuesday for additional comment, but his decision to back Thompson seems relatively recent.
Johnson was asked on March 23, when it was announced that Giuliani would speak at a May 5 event in Savannah, if he backed the New Yorker for president. The candidate later canceled his appearance.
But at the time, Johnson responded, "The only thing I'm endorsing is Cinco de Mayo."
>>”They’re trying to create at least the appearance of a groundswell of support to induce him to get into the race,” said Atlanta political consultant David Johnson.
Hey David. It’s real.
Fred is the only guy out there, that gets conservatives motivated.
While we wait for Fred Thompson to announce a decision, don’t forget there is a strong conservative already running, Duncan Hunter.
If Fred Does jump in any time soon, maybe we can see them together on the ticket.
Ya beat me to it....
That being said, ready to donate when he does. I still have much research to do on him, but I'll wait for the announcement. From what I have seen, he's very favorable over Guiliani, Romney and well, let's just forget about McCain and never mention him again...
IMHO, it’s not enough to elect Thompson. What’s needed is something on the order of another ‘Contract With America’. A public laundry list of commitments on key platform issues that conservative candidates in the House and Senate can get elected on and hopefully implement. I can remember feeling disappointed when the ‘94 Congress seemingly reneged on their commitment of support for term limits.
It’s got to be an easily recognizable campaign, with all candidates uttering the same slogan. Something like: “Hi, I’m Joe Schlabotnick, candidate for Congress, and I want to get ahead with Fred!” Same music, like the little notes you hear in ads for Pentium computer chips. Same little logo in the corner of the screen. Something that’s instantly recognizable no matter what candidate is running. It’d be like taking the McDonald’s approach to coordinated campaign ads.
How about a Thompson/Hunter ticket? Works very well for me.
Make that “Move Ahead With Fred!”
The tag music could be the last five notes of the song “Whip It” by Devo.
I think the country is real need of the two of them at the helm. Thompson has the notoriety that Hunter doesn’t. Both are strong conservatives. I don’t think either would take much off of the left.

Also, is it just me, or have there been practically no new endorsements of Rudy over the last couple of months, ever since he started sticking his foot in his mouth over abortion?
Most people couldn't pick Duncan Hunter out of a lineup, that's not saying much for someone who's been in Congress for well over a quarter of a century. There are a lot of congresscritters who have managed to make a name for themselves in less than half the time. When someone in the MSM actually mentions Duncan Hunter's name the day after a debate, then he might be on the road to getting out of single digits in the polls.
If Fred Does jump in any time soon, maybe we can see them together on the ticket.
Nope, Fred's going to be smart and pick a black man to be his VP choice. He's going to be savvy enough to take advantage of all the pissed off black people out there who are hacked off that Hillary stole the nomination from Obama.
